License to Ill had 3MTA3, NOT 3WM078. I know this because I had it on my 68 1600 for 6 months before Maryland MVA made me give it back. It was the tail number on the plane, on the album cover

In Oregon you can put historic plates on your car and the fee is only $15.00 paid once for as long as you have the car. There are limitations to this great idea though. While I see cars being driven with these plates all the time, legally you can only use the car for parades, club events, and maintenance purposes. I fought hard to try to get DMV to allow me to use the plates I had on my original roadster, purchased new in 1968, but since the color scheme and graphics have changed a few times since then they refused to allow me to put the color correct plates for the year of manufacture on Mr. Hyde without going the historic plate route. Bummer. I still have the same plates I had on my first 2L, but they are mounted on the garage wall instead of where they belong.

My 1960 Datsun is registered with original Gold California plates from 1956 (w/1960 Tags).



But I went Custom with my 1964 3-seater:



Hanami (花見?, lit. "flower viewing") is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the beauty of flowers, "flower" in this case almost always meaning cherry blossoms (桜 or 櫻, sakura?), or ume blossoms (梅, ume?). From mid January to early May, sakura bloom all over Japan. The blossom forecast (桜前線, sakurazensen?, lit. cherry blossom front) is announced each year by the weather bureau, and is watched carefully by those planning hanami as the blossoms only last a week or two. In modern-day Japan, hanami mostly consists of having an outdoor party beneath the sakura during daytime or at night. Hanami at night is called yozakura (lit. "night sakura"). In many places such as Ueno Park temporary paper lanterns are hung for the purpose of yozakura.

And...My Old 69 1600 had a very rare California Black plate especially made for Ham Radio Operators. It is a Black plate with only 4 Digits!

Dan, there's a back story to your license plate that perhaps you don't know.

The original holder of the federal call sign W6VG (reading your license plate) was a fellow by the name of Ronald Panton of Menlo Park, Cal. He was a licensed radio hobbyist, as you pointed out, and qualified for those license plates as a customary way to help authorities identify possible volunteer emergency radio communicators. ( I had my call letters on my '68 1600 for many years too.)

Panton let his radio license expire in 1994, possibly having passed away by then. Most of those 4-place calls were first issued in the 1930s, since California filled their allotment up very quickly, requiring additional place holders. (California is the only state with its own zone, "6," in the scheme of call signs issued by the Federal Communications Commission).

At some point after 1994, someone named Neil A Panton of La Honda, Cal. took possession of the W6VG call sign. He traded up to one of the senior, 4-place sequences from his much longer and more junior call sign of KI6NBV.

The FCC allows relatives of a deceased radio hobbyist priority to apply for what are considered highly desirable 4-place calls. Neil has also passed away, according to a public database, but his radio license does not expire until 2018. Since these are ten-year licenses, he was still with us through last year. Eventually those call letters will be sought by someone else, and they may very well be interested in having those tags if you're not using them anymore (noting the past tense in your reference).

my in laws are still there, and one weekend i plan on driving the wife down in the roadster to visit them.

I own two datsun roadster related plates, both of which I got by being at the right place at the right time. SPL 311 is on my 1600 and SRL 311 is waiting for a 2000 to show up in my garage. I have had the BC plates for going on 20 years. I drove the 1600 to Shasta this year and was shocked that Alvin did not have the plate in his collection.

I could actually license my car with these year of manufacture plates. Instead, I ordered some ego, er, um, personalized plates. They should be in within the next three weeks. I'll post ego pics when I get them in.

Unless we spend big bucks we only get 3 letters and 3 numbers to play with in Queensland. With a bit of imagination and luck we can still get something different.
