UPDATE:

I think I am going to pull the tack back out. There is a rubber 'gasket on the inside of the tachometer that I am sure acts as a damper to the mechanical inputs of the tach drive. It is white and seems to be in good shape. However, when I tighten the screws on back they stop short of tight and the tach can move in the housing. The two mounting screws appears to have a rubber or some kind of malleable washer for lack of a better word. My speedometer has the same thing, and they are in good shape as the speedo is nice and tight in the gage pod.

I am wondering if I should find some rubber washers for the outside, or a thicker insulator for the inside, or both.

Is there an exploded view of the tach anywhere in the wiki for this car?

BY the way, I am having a ball doing this.

I also think I found a way to pressurize my heater core. I have a mighty vac brake vacuum bleeder. But it can induce positive pressure as well. If I block off one end, and I can fill it with water and pressurize the core. I will try to rig this up and take photos today. If it holds, I will put it back into the heater box and maybe just maybe I can start the rebuilding process again.

But while I am here I am going to put a new carpet in. Seem like a shame not to. I have already replaced ALL the vinyl in the car.

The likely source is Dean, but is there another recommended 'better' source for some black carpet?

There are a few sources for carpet. Dean's is good if you want stock. Someone on ebay is selling molded carpet which looks good. If you want to "roll your own " you can get black indoor -outdoor carpet at home depot for cheap

I kind of "cheaped-out" when I bought my carpet and went with some EBay outfit. Visually, it looks fine but If I had it to do again I'd make sure to purchase a kit that had things like the shifter, e-brake, and footrest areas already cut out - it's a serious, time consuming PIA.

Great news... I ran my pressure test on the heater core today. I filled it with water and ran a test. This was my setup.



I did this once in this configuration and once with the other end pressurized so I could see if either end cap leaked. The core was filled with water nearly completely full. I saw no leakage while pressurized to 7-8 psi. I only held pressure for 10 seconds or so. Now I want to try again with near boiling water to see if it makes a difference, but it should not. And the idea of one of my rubber stoppers flying out with near boiling water is not something I want to risk in the house.





Great to know I have a solid core. Now on to the water valve.

Also got my first shipment in from dean. The plastic windshield surround will work for my car looks REALLY crappy to my eyes. It does not wrap around the top like the OEM one did. I am not sure I am even going to use it. How it costs 215 dollars is mind boggling.

The new 4 piece unit he sells was 'not available'. Love Dean and his service, but that part is truly terrible to my eyes. I may not even try to install it. Not sure. I will snap pics of it later today.

Bummer about the windshield pad set. I took my car to the BRE Reunion last weekend and someone else mentioned Dean wasn't selling them anymore. I wonder if it's because people were having problems installing it? It's tricky, but really looks pretty good! Maybe you can call him directly - perhaps he has some some just sitting in a corner and would sell on a "no-return" basis?

Pretty limited on carpet kits.
Im no fan of the surged edge carpet kits. One could however, fit the carpet, then take it to a sewing person and have a vinyl or cloth edge sewn on. Costlier yes, but much nicer finish, imo, and certainly worth the price for your car ZK.

Unless I am mistaken, the serge binding is correct for the 1600s and 2000s. The 1500s have vinyl binding

Never did get the radio to come on when I gave her 12V though? Although it was not grounded to anything.. HUM......

FWIW, the engine pumps it up to maybe 12-14psi. And for longer than 10 seconds. So...

So what you saying is my acceptance test is not enough, I need an actually qualification test with off limits testing to may be 15 psi. I really thought it was about 8 psi. 14 psi seems pretty steep. But I will check it out. THanks for the update!
