Can a late model 5th gear be swapped into an early box?

Post by SLOroadster »

Does anyone know if I can just swap a splined 5th gear assembly into an early box? From the looks of it I should be able to pull my press fit one out and stick the splined one in. I'd like to drive my car before the end of the year.

thanks,
Will

Will, check page 12 of the tech bulletins. I believe you're right and you cn change them out, it gives part numbers too.

Mark,
Did you ever find the flowbench numbers for a U20 head?

According to the TSB, VERY few roadsters had the splined 5th stock from the fatory. It states that they switched at SRL 14141, seeing as how the highest VIN number on the registry is 14360 of the near 15000 made, this leads me to beleve that all the BW boxes up to 14141 will suffer the same issue as well. Am I smoking crack on this? Please enlighten me if I'm wrong.

sorry bout not getting back to on the flow numbers... my cylinder head guy doesn't have anything useful on the U20 head. He found a few scattered notes, but nothing that made any sense. It's been soo long since he's done one.

as far as the 5th gear hub. i'm not sure about the VIN numbers on the trans at all, i just finished going thru my 5spd and opted not change out the hub for the splined hub. i did a tackweld on the nut to keep it from backing off. All my trans really needed was a set of bearings (i lucked out)

As far as I'm aware the two 5th gears are identical except for the splines. You can change them out and it doesn't matter whether you have an early single mainshaft nut box or a latter one with a double nutted mainshaft. It's been 12+ years but I seem to remember replacing my failed press fit 5th with a splined one rather than a welded one.

5th gear woes

If you check Fairlady Products, Dean has been pushing the spline issue in the 5 spd for sometime. From the sound of the issue if you are going to rebuild your tranny you better spline 5th.

I no longer deal with Dean, he has screwed up too many times and caused me to sweat bullets over being overdrawn (by $1000 for a $500 purchase.) He dropped the ball on 2 past orders as well. I will never order anything from him again. He has the cool stuff, but after the last mistake I will find another source, or just have stuff made.

I do agree that I need a splined 5th in this thing, I spend way to much time in it be it passing someone or running down the freeway.
