I have to say that 2004 has not been a good roadster year for me. First the engine then the electrical issue, followed shortly by the transmission and waterpump issue, and now the rear end.
I Drove the roadster to work on tuesday, it was fine when I went to work, and when I went to lunch, I couldn't put any power down. The back end would break loose in a straight line, in any gear.
I jacked it up and the driverside wheel didn't turn the axel at all. The right side will drive the left side, but it is definetly not right. Good thing I still have a 3.9 complete rear end that I can swap in. (It will even help with the 4spd issue as well)
Now to see if I can source the parts to fix it. That should be fun.

Damn, what is it with your roadster? It always has problems!!!! Hopefully you can solve this problem, and hopefully another problem will not hit you soon!

DATZOOM where are you? I think I need some parts sourced. At this rate, my dad is never going to get his miata back. Just when I was thinking I might have everything sorted out (mostly). Hey the engine is still strong and doesn't leak anywhere.
Perhaps by Solvang I will have things back in order.

I've got all the parts, and a 4.68 rear end would not work on the street. I'm looking forward to trying my extra 3.9 to see how it goes.

The posting that shows the rearend if you read in the ad he also has a 4.62 with a lsd for sale. You could call him and ask how much for the rear and take the lsd out.

I didn't see a LSD with that. I think it is an open rear end. I think a 3.9 LSD is the hot setup with higher Hp. The 4.11 is a little short for autoX, a 3.9 will offer a very flexable 2nd (as long as you have enough lowend torque.) If I can get my open one swapped in, even with the 5 minus 1 gearbox (that might be an easier fix than I thought.) it will be interesting to see how the car runs.

he has the lsd sold seperately off auction in the gear set. $1100 I think is steep. Hell for $1500 I could have a custom 8" ford rearend made with disc brakes and LSD with parts a plenty at any autoparts store.

You maybe right. I only threw that number out because I have seen dana 60's all built up for $2k or so. The point being and I may even do this, you can get all the new technology LSDs out there and an infinite gear ratio with disc brakes bolted right up to your car with minimal effort. The only thing you would have to do is modify the driveshaft, hook up the hydralic lines and emergency brake.

I bet I could take a late model roadster rearend in and just have it duplicated in the new axle. Some may jeer at this and say they would rather have a irs, but I just like solid axles. The cars handle great as is!

But if you did the Ford rear end swap, it would be a hell of alot simpler. For the most part. it would be a bolt in, after you got got back from the macine shop. Unless there is something out there I don't know, doing an IRS rear end much more involved.
