Body-off Resto: Removing the body (with pics)

Post by Speedyshel »

Hey everyone,
I just recently removed the body of my '69 2000 off the chassis and documented each and every step required to do so. I figured it may help those who are a little unsure of what it takes to do so and maybe inspire those who hadn't found the interest to do so.
I did my best to have pictures for the steps and make it as clear as possible.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated and I'll be happy to make changes or whatever necessary to make this as easy to use as possible.

Hope this helps!!

Oh, and thanks to those who provided me with useful tips to doing so before I tackled what seemed like a very daunting task at first. Turned out, it was a LOT of fun. ;)

Wow, I specifically searched for a place to upload it where you don't need to log in to view it because I know how aggravating it is to create yet another username and password to remember. I'll work on getting this fixed. Sorry :/

Edit: Turns out I DID have it set to public, but that wouldn't take effect until I went through the usual "check your email address to verify your account" procedure. All done and should be working fine now...I hope. Let me know if there's still a problem accessing it.

Agreed, this is nice and the pictures are very clear. Well done!
Now how about some pictures of your project with the body off, and the frame?
Looks like you have a heck of a project in front of you, good luck!

Your #1 step should always be to disconnect the battery first. Neg. (ground wire ) first. With gas in that area, you dont want to blow your project up before you even get started. Just a suggestion.

True that! I shall make that change and upload the addition. I didn't think to add it, because my poor lil Roadster hasn't seen an electrical current in a while so the battery wasn't there to disconnect :D I'll post some pics of progress soon!

Sheldon, thanks for going to the trouble of taking time to post pictures, and add a write up on how to do this. it had to be very time consuming, stopping to get your hands clean enough to handle a camera, and take notes as you go.

It was my pleasure. I'm glad I got to document it in a manner that others could decipher :D
I'll post pictures of my progress soon - just gotta get school and work to slow down. Post back here soon.

Hey everyone,
I'm still not quite sure if there's a specific location to be documenting a resto project, but I've had some pictures at my Car Domain page: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3883219/1 ... oody-al-us.
My journey with these little things began March 12, 2010 while working on a deck job. On the morning of March 12, I arrived at the job site and saw this little silver car sitting in the driveway. "What could that be?" I'm not from the US, so my first thought was (like the homepage of this site says) a little MG. I drooled over this car for the three days we worked on this job and then finally saw the owner. "What you doing with that?" I asked. "You want it? I have 5 of them." he said. I bought 3 of his cars and the other two are more just rolling chassis that I didn't have space to keep.
As soon as I managed to organize a trailer and haul the car home, I started gutting the interior to see the extent of the damage from sitting in the weather for 5 years.
Cleaned the engine and the exterior and then did a quick polish on the chrome pieces to see their potential. Managed to start the car right up and the radio and all the lights worked fine....I was shocked to say the least.
So, after starting the car up, I decided to tackle the brakes and clutch and got them working perfectly. From there, I get to where I am now.
I've recently sanded lots of the chipped and cracked paint off to ease the job of the future soda blaster (and save myself some coin too). I put that project off and I removed the body from the chassis instead. I cleaned the chassis and stripped some of the suspension and I'm on the verge of sending the body and chassis for paint.
So that having been said, here's a few of my recent pics:
