These are valve seals?

Post by eastmedia »

While at the Dana Point BBQ, Carlos (69 2000 FJ20- don't know last name but THANKS for the info) pointed out that the smoke I was getting was probably due to needing valve seals. Well luckily my car came with 2 packs of new seals never opened. I set about to removing the srpings and found this:

These are the new ones I put on:

And the previous owner said he just had the head redone. I wonder how many more surprises are in store for me!?!?

Now thats the fourth variation Ive seen.
Must be an aftermarket one that tried to improve on the 2nd generation seal which went over the end of the valve guide but was not held down by the valve spring.
I imagine that it would seal and not ride up the valve stem, but it might also lose valve spring compression because it does not have a base plate.

Anyone else seen one of those?

I don't think it they were even sealing well at all. I also notice a drastic improvement in my oil pressure guage which went from almost 0 at idle to the middle mark.

Tailpipe smoke has been reduced about 80%. Still a little, but I attribute that to running a little rich.

It still seems to have a little blow-by from the breather tube, But I have an aftermarket breather (due to velocity stacks) that doesn't go to the air cleaner so I don't know how much would be normal.
