GM Alternator in a 68 2000

I've recently put a 1 wire GM alternator in my 68 2000 during and engine swap for another U-20. I would appreciate any feedback to make sure I did it right before I fire it up and see smoke, or it won't turn off, etc.
javascript:emoticon(':oops:') I'm about 1 weekend away from firing it up. I purchased a rebuilt GM alternator from Advanced Auto Parts (Part # 7127M-3). I disconnected and capped the harness plug to the voltage regulater and the harness plug that went to the stock alternator - I will not be using the AMP meter in the dash.

From the BAT stud on the back of the GM Alt I ran an 8 GA wire to a 40 amp fuse then from the fuse another 8 GA wire to the Battery POS. From the plug terminal in the back of the GM Alt I ran the red wire to the BAT stud and did not use the white wire.

The Battery Pos to the Starter POS.

I ran another 8 GA wire from the Starter POS to another 40 amp fuse and connected the 2 wires (Black and Green w/ White Stripe I think) to the fuse that originally went to the starter POS.

I've seen websites where some people use 30 amp fuses, and others use 50 amps. I split the difference and that is why I have 40 amp fuses.

The physical install of the GM alt was easy since the donor vehicle started it's life in Guam and already had the stock alternator on the passenger side.

It sounds like you have everything correct. Erik Smeby did a really nice write-up on the install for the high windshield cars. You can view it here http://www.311s.org/tech/electrical/gmalthigh.html I do not run any fuse between the alternator and the battery as there is nothing to protect there. I do run a 30 Amp fusible link from the wires coming off of the starter that feed the wiring harness. That is just me though. You should be fine with the way you wired it up.

MGSLAYER, now there is a fitting name for someone who has a 2ltr :twisted: ! I slayed one 2 weeks ago, a kid rolled up next to me with a healthy sounding midget, and wanted to race, the race was over the second the light turned green. He didn't know what he was racing.

Sorry, I find modern engine swaps revolting. Keep your G, R, or U series in your Roadster!

Thanks Steve. Never hurts to get a 2nd opinion.

Will, my tags read "MGSLAYR" as well. I'm suprised I got that by the MD MVA, :roll: but then again that was almost 14 years ago...... I guess I really am a Roadsterholic at heart.
