My Dyno Numbers!

Post by Dave »

Hi guys,

I managed to drag my sorry butt and two vehicles down to the dyno this weekend.

The roadster (SR20DET) laid down 169 Hp and 148 torque at the wheels. Still have some tuning to do! It's running really lean down low but OK up top. Hmmmm.....

Just for kicks I decided to dyno my old beater Mazda rotary pickup too. I know some of you guys were interested in the project 66 is working on. This should give you some kind of an idea of what kind of power he could expect. I'm not sure what his set-up is beyond what's obvious from the pictures. Mine is a 13B rotary with a 50mm sidedraft Weber DCO, BIG BIG BIG street ports, Racing Beat intake and exhaust, and as you can see from the picture, one heck of a misfire above 6,750 RPM! Still, not bad for simply pulling out from the shed and driving it down there. It hasn't seen a tune-up in 4 years and I think I filled the gas tank in July...

Just for fun, if you want to see the roadster in action, Steve was nice enough to put the video up for me. This should answer all those "but does it still sound like a roadster?" questions!

WARNING - it's 3 megs so if you have dial up, you best go pop yourself some popcorn and wait. Since it is such a big file, it likely won't be hosted forever so get your viewing in now!

The exhaust note is pretty sweet. :D
I'm sure a few people turned their heads when youve put the pedal down to pass.
The charts definately have me considering an engine swap after mine gets tired.
I'll have to wait a bit of time thou, as my fresh engine has just over 1k on it.
Thanks for the audio/video inspiration.

Thanks for the kind words guys! :D

Alvin, I was hoping you would chime in. Without the help of guys like you, TR, and of course Michael Spreadbury at Spriso that car never would have been on the dyno that day!

As I said, there's some work left to do. At 169 Hp, I'm down a good 10 Hp from where that engine should be. It's now a matter of figuring out why. If you look at the top of the RPM range, the curves get pretty choppy. I've been told that's an indication that "something" is going on but I am still collecting opinions as to what it might be. Possibly the ECU detecting knock and retarding timing, a misfire, bad O2 sensor, or the MAF sensor going bonkers from being too close to the turbo. That's all part of the fun though.

Did you notice the guy in the background covering his ears when I got on it? He he he....

As for the rotary, well, people walked out it was so obnoxious. It gets 14 MPG on the freeway on a good day, blows out any exhaust system I stick under it, leaves your lungs burning after a drive, sounds like a pack of GT cup motorcycles, and has been known to throw 2 to 3 foot diameter fireballs out of the two exhaust tips when the mixture isn't quite right. What can I say? I love it! If anyone is interested, send me a private message (don't send me an e-mail as I rarely check it) and I can send you a video clip of the truck on the dyno.
