My brother and I shared driving his '69 VW Westfalia from Washington, DC to Huntington Beach, CA sometime in '75-'77 (fuzzy on the year). Also don't remember where we picked it up (probably Knoxville), but took I-40 most of the way. Took approx 42 hours averaging 58 mph. Google Maps show 2,665 mi – about 1 day 17 hours using toll roads.
Easier to sleep in the van vs a roadster, but I say....
JUST DO IT!!!!
From a different cross-country ride: If you have time and are taking I-10, by-pass San Antonio by going through Austin (AVOID RUSH HOUR!!!!) and take SR-290 through Fredricksburg. Absolutely gorgeous horse country.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
I am not driving. Flying in. Bought my BRE reunion dinner ticket today.
Unfortunately my wife is not going. In the excitement of a possible roadtrip I seemed to imply that this would be a good sightseeing trip, but in reality it's 4 days of watching cars go around a track and little time to explore the "south".
So I have an extra ticket if anyone wants to go to the reunion.
One of these days I will drive her across the country!
I will be there as well, flying out Wednesday and returning on Sunday.
I will strongly advise that you buy your tickets in ADVANCE as this will show support for the event and you will be guaranteed a ticket.
Speaking to Gale Brock this is going to be a very popular event with the largest number of original BRE cars together at one time since they raced in the 60's and 70's.
I am transporting my BRE Z across the country for this event, along with 5 other Datsuns from the west coast. It is going to be quite a Datsun event.

Ok, I booked my hotel today...only going to be able to make it Saturday and Sunday. Question...(mostly for Brad, I guess), when i purchase my ticket, do I need to purchase the addtional parking fee, or is that included with being part of the SEROC club? Just want to make sure i'm not stuck outside Thanks!
I sure wish I could be there...Alvin, BRE, and a new SEROC president...it figures it would all happen on a year I can't make it (still stuck in Iraq). The Mitty is my annual trip with my son. We stop at Summit Racing on I-75 and he LOVES when we chug (our daily driver struggles on that hill) up the entrance hill at RA to get to the Roadster area. Please post picture (I'm sure Alvin will have that covered). I'm asking a friend if he'll drive my car up so there is one more Roadster in the count. It has rained every year I attend so maybe it's best I'm not there (the afternoon storms were bad last year, but made for a slick track with lots of sliding cars!)...man I wanted my dash autographed! Enjoy the event and welcome aboard Roger and as always thanks Brad.
And you better be wear the shirt I'm giving you at Solvang next Friday to the Mitty!!

Sorry, plans changed, I was outvoted. My Wife said No to 2 car shows and 3 airflights in a week, so we are going to Sequoia and Yosemite and staying in the nice frilly Bed and Breakfast etc, etc, after Solvang. I really wanted to see these parks before someone puts a WalMart in the middle of them, so It's not like she's twisting my arm.
Maybe I can drive down next year, or trailer, park 100 miles away and drive the car in and pretend to have driven down . Next year may be Mitty and Shasta
