:?: Just a thought, since some of the folks have hardtops and not everybody whats to yank the thing off everytime.

I remember a seeing a MG-B GT that used to come into the local gas station. It had A/C in it!! Can't figure how that stuff all that extra stuff under the hood, but it was in there!!

Just wonder if any of the radical guys in this group had gone to that extream !!!

I think that some of the more inventive types in Texas have done it. That is the rumor anyway. It would not be too hard. You can get a Sanden compressor, do away with the smog pump (btw, this is easiest on late cars because they are setup with dual pulleys) and mount the compressor there. Nissan AC units from the trucks were very small, and they could work. You can also check with the street rod guys. There are a lot of 30something cars out there with AC. If you think things are cramped under the dash of the roadster, check one of those out! Vintage Auto Air in Tampa may be a good source.

alternate to A/C

Ya know, what I have considered for a hardtop is making the rear window hinge out (maybe use the hinges from ExtraCab pickup) so that air flow could circulate better.
Another option would be to put a cheap (JC WHitney) sunroof in the top of the hardtop. I'd try those before I took the plunge with all the hardware/plumbing for A/C, and also took the hit for lost horsepower.
I am biased, as I am pretty large and most every task I spend 50% of the time gaining enough access to get the job done.

One thing to keep in mind is that the air curls around the cab and blows back toward the windshield while the car is under way, hence all the "blockers" currently in fashion that mount between the seat backs on convertibles.

Opening up the back window could result in a lot of air coming in. Seems to me that relieving the pressure inside the cockpit would do a lot for improving airlflow through.

If you've got the room under the rear window (or above, or on the side), maybe adapting the rear deck air vents (the rectangular ones) from an early 240Z would be an alternative. Keeping it in the family, so to speak.

old post but i was told that by me a nissan dealership has a roadster in the show room with a/c. takes up the passenger side of the car...ill go look at it next week and report back...a/c weighs to much i took that and the powersteering off my 73 plymouth and o the power brakes also..all about weight!!

check out vintage air. They have complete compact setups for street rods. Also if you look at the compressors the SR's come with the are extremely small. I don't think it would be too hard to adapt. You could take a A/C under dash unit from a 510 and adapt it to fit a roadster.

The A/C question was something my fifteen your old son was bugging me about..


I told hin that the reason for the CONVERTIBLE TOP was ENJOY the "GREAT OUTDOORS". Or as my Dad said " Yeah, I got your Air Conditioning for you ... 2-40 Two windows rolled down and 40 MPH down the road !" :wink:
