High Volt/Low volt Part 2

Post by Datsa 66 »

All,

Did some troubleshooting in the garage tonight and believe I solved the mystery. Ronnie Day was right, the car was running on battery after the AMP gauge read low.

I thought the alternator was suspect, so I went to take it out of the car. I have a single wire GM alternator conversion. It has a a plastic connector that hooks the hot wire to the post and a white wire that I am assuming is ground that travels back into the wiring harness.

So I unplug the connector and the hot wire falls right out of the connector. It is broken off. It does not look melted. No juice to the post means no voltage. It doesn't look too hard to repair, but the alternator is still suspect. Can the alternator be tested out of the car? I want to see if it is OK before I hook everything back up.

I am also looking for the voltage regulator. Is is wired right in front of the fuse box? Not being the most technical of people I am looking for a little help here.

Thanks for the help,

I forgot you did the swap. You don't have the voltage regulator, its in the alternator. I thought you were using a stock one in order to keep the car correct.

Sorry, I find modern engine swaps revolting. Keep your G, R, or U series in your Roadster!

Didn't know that. Not the most technical guy when it comes to the cars. Anyhoo, I am going to take the thing down and get it tested. I need to fix the lead and that should be that.

connector repair

Not uncommon for the plugs to fall out, especially if they are crimp-on.
I have a soldering iron that I'll bring on Monday (correct day?) and a voltmeter. (I have one, doesn't mean I have used it alot or am some expert, by the way)

Fergus,

Monday is the day. Bring your iron and some solder and we will give it a bash.

See you then!

Andy,

The wires for the GM altenator are as follows, The heavy post off the rear goes to positive sid eof the battery, via a fusible link, The Two wires coming out of the side of the altenator ( white connector) The heavy red wire goes to the post on the rear ( very short wire, 10 gauge in size) The smaller wire (sometimes white, 16 gauge) goes to your ignition source via a fuse. No ground wires ! The battery ground strap to the engine and ground strap to the body will provide all the ground you need.
