There's the Flying Flags RV park just a few hundred feet from the Garage museum we meet at on the friday nite before the Show in Buelton. They accommodate all from tents to class A's. That's where a few of us stay, Phil, Alvin, and I.

We camp at the Flying flags but I've always wanted to try the lake that Linda mentioned.
If all of you are going to FF then I will too!

Kyle you don't need to make reservations now, maybe in March.

I am open to camping anywhere. I can even sleep in the car if necessary. LOL We could get spots at two different locations and spend a night at each.

There is also several camping ground on the ocean...one year we had a "cruise" out to the park on the ocean. I think it was Jalama.
It has a group area D that looks promissing.

Description & Features:
This area has 7 picnic tables, 2 preparation tables, sink and 2 30-amp RV pedestals. 25 yards from restrooms; 75 yards from playground.

I have made reservations the week before at the "Flags" without a problem, sooner would be better if we are going to try a new location.

This is for Solvang, and travel in general.

I was online booking a rental car for Solvang, and ran across a great deal. National Rental Car has coupon and discount codes that can be mixed and matched for some crazy good deals. There's online postings of which ones to try. Great deals can be found if you want to play for an hour and plug in numbers. Anyone going to Orlando / Disney needs to try this, can save 75%!!
Since we're doing a one way rental and dropping the car off in San Francisco, that can add a bunch of charges.

I called National to verify it was valid and required no special ID, they said it was fine.
The contract code is 5400321 and valid throughout the state of California for $35.00 a day and no one way charges.
Add to this coupon code ND1881JDK for $40.00 off.
Also, you should join their Emerald Club, it's free http://www.nationalcar.com/offer/SBS2006
LAX has the "Emerald Aisle", where you pick whichever car you like, sometimes a big upgrade.
I ended up with a car for 6 days for $186.00, compared to $391.00 without playing the numbers game  .
FYI, For Disney, go to http://www.Mousesaver.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We just got back from a run down to Hearst Castle/San Simeon.
There were 28 cars!!!

I thought about running this on the way down to Solvang from the Bay Area, instead of taking 101.
We would split from 101 after Gilroy, take 15 to Hollister then go down 25 to San Miguel.
It's about 170miles.
If not for Solvang let's plan to do it another time it's amazing!

Any recommendations for a hotel for those of us not camping? We stayed at Svengaard's lodge in Solvang last year, right across from the show, and it was very nice, pool hot tub etc. Just wondering if a bunch of people are staying somewhere else nearby. http://www.svendsgaardslodge.com/

Alvin, we drove up to Monterrey along the coast, past Hearst Castle, It was very nice. Only place I would consider avoiding is Pismo Beach, lots of traffic, but it was Sunday when we drove through. If you want to drive halfway and stay over, the Sea Otter in Cambria is very nice.

Can't find it if there is.

Hey Linda,
The website should be up soon from what I am told (this weekend). I believe it is the same web address as last year http://www.solvangshow.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but I have been wrong before... I believe it was back in 1979

SolvangShow Website is up, but with 2009 info, so it's getting close!

I called King Frederik, they are about half full, no kings or double queens left. He suggested booking ASAP as many people booked that weekend in the last few days. We're in!

BTW, whoever booked the big suite with the couch and the kitchenette should be nice and host an open house!

You might want to try to reserve a group site, then get checks from those wanting to stay there ahead of time. If not enough people commit then you can cancel the reservation, and just go individual.
