SU Carb Question

Here I go again. On the outer side of the SUs on the R engine, there is the main venturi opening, two threaded mounting holes even with it and two other holes. What do those holes do/lead to? If they're not used for anything, then there wouldn't be any problem covering them up or leaving them open, would there?

I just got to looking, thinking and planning about a cold air intake that I'll be running and maybe the headlight opening isn't the best way to go. Nothing solid, I'm still just in the thinking stage...
