I received my spring assortment today. The closest fit is .42" diameter, .047 wire diameter (23.3 inch pounds), but only 2" long. It fits perfectly but is 7/8" shorter than the original. It seems to have adequate pressure when the about 1/2" of the "piston" is out from the body of the tensioner (which is where a wear line in the backing plate indicates the tensioner foot has spent most of it's time.

I would be more comfortable with a 2 1/2" spring or even a 3" but haven't found one yet.

You should be able to stretch the spring a bit and not affect the tension.

A couple of guys on the forum offered me springs and one is on it's way. You guys are the best.

I was too impatient to wait for the stock replacement so I used my aftermarket spring and put in one washer as a shim (two wouldn't fit). I fired it up after sitting for a week plus and, lo and behold, no rattle. I'll take it to work this week just to see if it's really fixed.

Thanks to everyone for the tips.

Great to hear it worked. I'm also glad the discussion came up and I found out my math was wrong, so I'll recheck mine.

Dave,
Don't forget that the pressure the tensioner "sees" is at the very end of the line, so even if you have a super strong oil pump(higher than the 63psi stock relief spring setting), and considering the chain feed hole, I doubt you'll have more than 20 to 30 psi in the tensioner. Now you can use your "new" math skills to help you make a spring adjustment....

There's also the distinct possibility that the oil tube fixed the noise and I was just deluding myself as to the spring working...

Well, that's like asking someone if they're lying, the answer is always "no". Of course I'm not delusional.
