opinions
I just stated my opinion that is all. 1600s are cool and I wasn't trying to step on anyones toes.
Sorry for starting an uproar...

Sorry, I find modern engine swaps revolting. Keep your G, R, or U series in your Roadster!
Sid,
That is one hell of a summary. I have to agree with all you said. I too, would love a 67.5 for all of the mystique, but I would be afraid to drive it for fear of it getting scratched...
Pete-going to the NMRA, eh? You and I might be the only model railroaders on this list, although I am not heavily involved in trains much anymore. Someday when I cannot work on the car! TR

Will,
You did not start an up roar at all. As I said, everyone is entitled to express their own opinions. It does not mean we have to all agree but that is what makes this kind of medium interesting. You did not step on my toes nor hurt my tender feeelings.
Sid always does a great job of explaining things--especially roadster things!
Hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th!

Thanks all for the kind replies. After seeing how much I typed, I am surprised that anyone read all that drivel! I guess that I just had an opinion or two that needed to get out. Will, you did not get me started, I just wanted to clear the air about the 67.5 cars. Lots of folks make is sound like the sun rises and sets based on those cars. It just ain't so - they are just Roadsters with some differences in trim and drivetrain...
Truth be told, in my opinion the best Roadster is the one that Nissan never sold. It would be one of the pre-production mules to test the U20 motor in the Roadster - a low windshield, chrome dash early 67 body with the U20 and a 4 speed. Now, don't get me wrong, the 5 speed is cool and a great addition, but I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY (did I say really?) like that chrome dash...

Mark, you did let me drive it a bit. It definately feels more touring than performance. It is a really neat ride though (thanks for the opportunity to drive it! I have never driven my 1500 - at the rate that I am going on it, I may never get to... Sigh....)
I can also tell you that changing from the stock width tires to something a bit wider COMPLETELY changes the personality of the Roadsters. I had 155R14s on my car and recently changed to some wider tires (185 65 14 up front and 195 60 14 in the rear) and I have yet to find their limit. I only wonder what some really sticky wide tires would feel like! Gotta get the go fast motor under the hood....
Oh, for those that think that the back seat is useless in the 1500, it is actually a really interesting place to ride! You get a FANTASTIC view of things, and you really get a sense of how unprotected you are. The best part has to be the bewildered stares from the occupants of other cars. What a hoot!!!

grippy tires
Sid,
Next time you need tires, pick up a set of the 195-60-14 Falken Azenis tires. At $50 each with free shipping its hard to go wrong. Be prepaired to enter the realm of go-cart handling

Sorry, I find modern engine swaps revolting. Keep your G, R, or U series in your Roadster!
You guys are killing me now! There is a 3 seater available on ebay right now, and I have a hard enough time controling my ebay spending habits!
I love my 1600, though I would be very happy with more umph off the line. But, I am always trying to shift into 5th gear. Oops, I don't have another gear! Stuck with the 4 speed. That would be my only complaint.

Gavin,
Try a light flywheel, and a set of 40Phh solexs. You could also put a 5 spd gear box in as well.

Sid, You gotta take a ride with me at an autocross some time. I kind of gotta feeling the state championship might be up in Jax this year. If it is, I'll let you know. The 225/50-14 Hoosier's I'm running right now are about 10 inches wide and the stick is beyond what you can relate to with a street tire. They make the azenis feel like 80K mile cheapy radials. Last time I ran at Gainesville, there was one corner on the track that I'd guess i was up around 1.3g's sustained for 3-4 seconds. Talk about a head rush... It was borderline uncomfortable!spl310 wrote: I only wonder what some really sticky wide tires would feel like!
The Azenis are great tires for having fun with though. I just put another set on my car - this time I went up to the 205/50-15's as I got a set of Revolutions for the car. I highly recomend them.

Brian,
Sounds like a deal to me!! The last time I drove something with really sticky tires was back in college. It was a full race 1600, but the tires were not really warm enough to be sticking as well as they should. It was a hoot though!!
Do let me know when the Autocross comes up here. I would love to see a Roadster getting flogged!

New roadster(s) owner
We too are proud new parents. I am not nearly the afficianado that most of you are. We live in the outback of North TX, basically 100 miles from anywhere. We got our first roadster (SPL311-27158) from a guy in Washington. It was in boxes and zip lock bags. It's back together, painted, interior redone and fun to drive. We bought the second one (SPL311-29004) from a coronor's investigator in Denton, TX. This one is for sale. Does anyone know how to research a VIN? I've tried but because the numbers do not match the carfax numerical requirement it cannot be done through them. Allegedly the car began life as a registrant in Hawaii. Any assistance is appreciated.
Sam E. Griffin
That is great advice Sid.
Being the owner of a '70, with the butt-ugly trailer reflectors and the annoying door buzzer. Not that the bucket is running yet for me to listen to that noise (I wish). First one I looked at and almost bought was a 3 seater 64. Shoulda bought it!
And yes, I too look longingly at lots of roadsters and want to take them home with me! Its funny I had a really cool 1600 junior (Alfa) and a 450 sl, but neither of those made me want to buy 10 more...what's up with that???
