That ford rear end looks very cool. What car is normally in? And what is it's origonal width before before the mod...I am looking at the pic and see a lot of positives and interesting ideas for suspensions.

I don't know for myself but I've heard that the Ford 9" is extremely heavy.

Which is exactly why we are not using the 9" version!

The differential is the 8" version (Ford uses a 8", 8.8" and 9") and the application would be any of the smaller RWD Ford vehicles. The rear disk brakes are Ford Explorer versions. All of this is new parts however, ordered directly from Currie's website which I linked in a previous post.

Great question. It all comes down to how you are going to use the car, how much horsepower you intend to run, and how big your budget is. The RX-7 rear axle can be built for 1/2 of what it costs to buy a new axle from Currie Enterprises. The Mazda axle is harder to find, and there are limited gear choices compared to the Ford unit. The Ford unit is heavier, and physically larger than the Mazda differential, but you can get any gear set you want, parts are extremely common, and it should be 100% bullet-proof in a car of this size (with a limited rubber contact patch).

I hope this answers your questions,

They are using a ford 8"

That's two sizes down from the 9". i.e. 9"-8.8"-8"

At the power levels most Roadster owners are seeing, the 8" will be bullet proof. If you were doing full on drags, step up to the 9". I have seen full bodied pro stock 57 Bel Airs doing wheelstands without damaging the Ford 9". They are hell for stout. My old Mustang from years back had an 8". It was incredibly tough.

This is going to be another great SR powered beast, that Spriso Motorsports is proud to be a part of!

James' car on display at Jack Scoville Nissan:

Jack Scoville loves our roadsters and was delighted to display the car on his showroom for a few days...

Here is a shot of Jack racing his roadster back in the day (more info here: http://www.datsun.org/fairlady/JackScoville.htm)

Just a curiosity, but what kind of mpg is an SR20de/det roadster capable of?

I know the U20 only gets in the low 20's

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

I don't know where you are getting that. Here are some quotes from a very quick search:
Sunbeam590 wrote:Yes I am getting 35+ mpg on a trip now, not sure about in town, was getting 20+ when I got the car, also everyone was saying when I hit the gas black smoke was bad, but the big plus is no more bogging down, especially when going back to 2nd on steep hills, but it has been a steep learning curve as I had never seen a solex before, and having had all pommy cars was a gun on SUs, also the EL dizzy made a huge differance to the car as well.. as you say I also have 3 complets sets of jets, they are exy to get from USA with exchange & post. Enjoy the drive. Cheers..

I have heard others with similar claims of 30ish with a solex U20. Now, if you are flogging it, then you will see a different number...

Let's start a thread in the general section to discuss mileage so we don't cloud up this build thread too much with U20 mileage comparisons...

But to answer your question, most SR20DE roadsters get in the low-mid 30s on the highway-- the turbos less (but they don't care because they are having so much fun!)

Good point Michael,

General disscusion would be a better place for this type of question.

Thanks,
