What gearboxes will bolt up to a R16 motor?
Will L series gearboxes bolt up to R series engines?
I have a CSP311, and may need to replace the gearbox with a 5 speed. The 4 speed is crunching a little on the change to 2nd.
I have a spare 5 speed L gearbox from a 240K (skyline) That came out of my 240Z. Anyone know if that would fit?
R gearbox replacment

AFAIK, you can use some Z 5-speed transmissions with the U20 5-speed bellhousing. This is the reverse of the trick used to put a U20 5-speed into an early Z. The R16 and U20 transmissions can be swapped, though a recent thread indicated you need the U20 rear engine plate as the 5-speed input shaft is a little bit longer than the 4-speed. Also, first gear is higher, meaning slower off the line performance. This swap is best for modified R16 engines.
The G15, R16 and U20 (and H19, H20, and other relatives) are unique among Datsun/Nissan engines because the starter is on the left side. L, A, J, E, etc. engines put the starter on the right side, so the transmissions will not bolt up. I suppose with a custom engine plate you could use another transmission but that'd be a lot of work.
As for what you're experiencing, this is VERY common. Synchromesh goes out between first and second. It doesn't mean your transmission is going to die. Another tranny, unless freshly rebuilt, may have the same problem.
