Hey Michael
I have you had one of these swaps running with the air flow meter located like this one.
I have had them mounted like this before (in a 510) and with the previous setup that was in this car with no issues.

Sometimes they are happy, sometimes not. A general rule is ~15" inches from the MAF to the turbo, and we are just under that on this car. When we fire it up and take it for a ride we will quickly know if I have some rework in my future... :)

Thanks for your question,

Hi Michael,
A couple of non-technical questions that only I might be curious to know regarding all the work on this car:
First, what is the brand of paint that was used on the car, and the color?
And second, Do you guys have day jobs? :P
Seriously, alot of nice work!

Linda
Sadly-Linda has passed away 2022. She was the 311's den mother and drove the first Rare-Parts ball joint project. RIP.

The color is Plymouth Prowler Orange, and it is a PPG paint. Lots of clear coat, and a LOT of color sanding make it have amazing depth!

Yes, I have a day job, I can't afford the health insurance for my family otherwise! Eric is a student at Oregon State...

Hope that answers your questions!

Wow, I'm still sitting here stunned. This is absolutely beautiful work. A Datsun neophyte would think that came from the factory. This is pure art. I hope the owner plans on driving it like it deserves. I'm not even done with my project, and now I'm thinking of a SR20 project. Thanks a lot.

Absolutely beautiful! Top notch work.

Any issues with the tranny shifter lining up where it is suppose to?

The shifter on the 6-speed comes through the center of the 1600's shifter hole, no modifications necessary.

Ever try running the MAF in blow through? It has worked well for me in the past. Cleans up the engine bay nicely and allows you to run the BOV to atmosphere without the stalling issues!

How about the 5 speeds?
The 5-speed pokes through the center of the shifter hole on a 1600... perfectly.

The 2000 needs to have the shifter hole modified...

We have not had to do that, but might be a good solution if we run into MAF turbulence issues in the traditional setup.

Michael,
I think I remember you saying that the 6 speed is an awesome way to go, but it requires tunnel work--but you thought it was worth it. Do you have a picture of the floorpan showing how much has to be cut out to get it to fit well? Since the shifter is in the right location, I'd love to see how much hacking to the other parts of the floor pan is necessary.

Also, do you have recommendations for a source for S15/6speed combos? I don't want a turbo version and that's all I ever seem to see on fleabay...

Thx!!!

Not only tunnel work, but work to the X-member as well!

The 6-speed has a slightly larger bell housing and the right side of the transmission is wider than a standard 5-speed. On Mike's roadster the x-frame was modified extensively, to the point where we had to reinforce the outside edges of the X.

Since James' car was previously modified for the ultra-wide SR20DET automatic transmission, it was an easy fit.

To fit a 6-speed it would probably just be faster to rebuild the front two-legs of the X to give a little more room to clear the transmission rather than do all the little modifications to the X frame to clear the gear box.

Here are a few photos:

This is the automatic transmission, but it shows the modified front legs of the X-member.

The top and bottom of the X-member were plated to reinforce them...

This shot shows the 6-speed sitting in the frame. Click to enlarge!

As you may or may not know, the transmission tunnel is not symmetrical and it is much narrower on the passenger side. As the 6-speed is much larger, the side of the transmission tunnel needs to be modified to provide clearance.

Here is a shot of the side of the transmission tunnel removed from the body:

And the new replaced section:

With the carpet and sound deadening installed, you can't tell that the tunnel had been modified.

Lots of work! Just another day at the office... :)

That is truly amazing workmanship.I curious about your Z32 brake upgrade. How did you get the rotors to fit the spindles. I have done a 240sx complete conversion on all four corners including the brake booster. The car stops better than any car I ever owned but when I saw the look of your system up front I think the bar has been moved a way ahead the rest of the pack.
