Datsun hood emblem question..
I just bought a NOS genuine Nissan "DATSUN" hood emblem. When it arrived, I found out that it was the cheap plastic version, not the original metal one that I was expecting. My question is this...Did I get a cheap plastic emblem in a Nissan box, or did/does Nissan make this part in plastic now? The part number on the box is 65812-12900. I got it from an ebayer and paid $58 shipped!!!
He guarantees his items and I want to know if I should ship it back and eat the super inflated shipping costs. Thanks!

Re: Datsun hood emblem question..
Part number 65812-12900 corresponds to the "D A T S U N" letters for the front of the hood.
Yes, they now come in chromed plastic. The metal ones are harder to find.
The $58 in shipping sounds as though you bought from the one guy in Japan (gxrbt124) who has been finding some hard to find parts and some not hard to find parts, except that he usually posts his shipping / handling fees and they are usually reasonable.
OR
You bought from REDDAT who is in Houston Texas, but is known both for his undeclared shipping charges and questionable "handling" fees, all after the auction closes. He may have some items that seem hard to find, when in fact you can usually find them from either the Nissan dealer local to you, or from Dean at Datsun Parts, Ross at Sports Imports, Troy at Too Intense or Rallye in Washington.
As to whether the $58 can be recovered, well if they are unreasonable, and you bought through e-bay, you may have some recourse.

I think he paid $58 total, including the shipping...EScanlon wrote: The $58 in shipping sounds as though you bought from the one guy in Japan (gxrbt124) who has been finding some hard to find parts and some not hard to find parts, except that he usually posts his shipping / handling fees and they are usually reasonable.
I've seen a bunch of those sell and they always end up around the $35 to $45 range it seems. I figure if they don't specifically say they're metal, they're plastic.
Re: Datsun hood emblem question..
LOL! Live and learn I guess... REDDAT was the seller on ebay and the shipping and handling fees were not specified during the auction. I was charged $13 for shipping and handling when actual shipping was less than $1.50. It was $58 total. I guess I shouldn't have assumed they would be metal, but the ad read "NOS." I thought that NOS meant New Old Stock and that the emblems would have been manufactured at the time when roadsters were still new. I didn't think that NOS could pertain to reproduction or newly made parts. Can anyone clarify this for me? I appreciate everyone's input!

Re: Datsun hood emblem question..
I would tend to agree with you - NOS should be something exactly as it was when originally used. While the emblems you bought are 'new' and may technically be 'old stock' I would think a more accurate description would be 'reproduction'.

I am not too familiar with the high windshield cars. Did they come with metal or plastic hood emblems when new?

Yup that sounds like REDDAT. I bought something from him once on ebay as well. however, he made himself out to be a liar and when I NEVER got my item, I filed a claim with Paypal and got my money back. He claimed it was shipped, 4 months later and it still has not arrived. I read his feedback, I am not the first victim.

Re: Datsun hood emblem question..
New was metal, and IIRC, the part # superseded to the plastic ones, which likely fit a bunch of cars through the 70's.

Re: Datsun hood emblem question..
Yep, now I know about this guy. It could have been worse. I do have the original metal emblems, but my "N" is bent. Can the metal be bent back to original form or is it pot metal that will crack? I could just have the originals rechromed if the N could be fixed. Now before I make another mistake, what is the deal with the wiper boots?
I guess I will have to ask for help on this board before I purchase anything!

Wiper boots: guilty...
Reddat parts: guilty again. Same deal when I requested a total with shipping. ??? I bitched at the quoted price and it was lowered. If he is selling I am asking, "How much shipping?"

Re: Datsun hood emblem question..
I'd forgotten that Dean had the metal letters.
You might then check this link:

Apparently he has the individual letters available, but they need polish/chroming.... might be just the ticket.

I'm not for a minute saying the price shouldn't be that.. just i should've looked a little harder when our dollar was doing so well.

Re: Datsun hood emblem question..
The wiper boots are this little set of rubber boots that apparently fit no car ever made. It's like a recurring dream...A bunch of us have bought them, tried to figure out how to put them on the car, posted a question, everyone admits they did the same thing, and we toss them in the tool box. 3 months later, someone else asks, and the cycle continues.
It's funny, if you list the parts high, it sometimes promotes more sales than a cheap starting price. Voodoo Ebay?

Today we have a similar debate over this. Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone seen this before? The Laffer Curve. Anyone know what this says? It says that at this point on the revenue curve, you will get exactly the same amount of revenue as at this point. This is very controversial.

Re: Datsun hood emblem question..
Well, it looks like he is willing to give me $50 back if I mail it to him. Hopefully everything goes smoothly.... I will be purchasing just the "N" and then have all of them rechromed when all of my trim gets refinished. Thanks everybody for your help! I probably would have also purchased the wiper boots if they hadn't been mentioned!
