Metric vs. SAE Redux

Post by Roupp »

Hello All,

I recently bought a 70 1600 and my indoctrination to the world of roadsters seems to be a trial by fire. To cut to the point: What years did they switch from SAE to metric and did they change all the fasteners on the car to metric or just some of them?

Thanks

Most of the engine threads changed to metric in 67.5 with R16 engine #40,001 and above. U20 was always metric. Head bolts for all are SAE. Other parts are interchangeable, such as head, transmission, oil pan, regardless of whether threads are metric or SAE. Most if not all of the rest of the car remained SAE through the end of production.

Thanks Adam. On my way home last night I picked a duplicate set of SAE bolts for attaching my gas tank straps back on. Sure enough they did the trick.
