Years ago, before my lovely wife bought me an engine hoist for my birthday, I found a Hoyer lift on the side of the road. For those that don't know, it is a hoist to lift invalids out of bed and into a wheelchair. It makes a great compact engine hoist. The only big issue with it is that all 4 wheels caster which can make it fun if you are not on level ground. The legs spread in and out to get around things, so that is a nice feature. Most are rated for about 450 to 550 lbs, but that is live weight - dead weight does not wiggle so much, so it hangs better. If you check Craigslist, I have seen them on there for free or dirt cheap. Of course, folding engine hoists are only about $99 - $149 on sale, and they are MUCH more useful.

Dave's idea works well - if you are on the SEVERE budget and can't find a freebie, I have used a loop of chain and a come-a-long (manual cable winch) and it worked just fine too. That costs about $15 total...

Here is a pic of a Hoyer lift.

Personally, I would use something a bit more durable....
