Hello!!---My new to me 67 1/2 Datsun 1600

Post by Bob2 »

High all. I picked up a 67 1/2 Datsun 1600 Roadster the other day with intentions on parting it out. But I have fell in love with this little car and decided that I will spend a little time and get her running again. It has been sitting outside since 2001. It is pretty rough, but I think with a little time should be driveable. It has a lot of bondo in the usual areas, and while rebuilding the starter, I noticed a rusted area on the lower firewall near the exhaust. I poked at it and now have a baseball size hole. It took about 6 hours, but after rebuilding the starter, cleaning/adjusting points, and cleaning the carbs, I have it running very roughly now. I am gonna need a lot of help on these carbs!!!

Supposedly the motor was rebuild in 2001 and driven very little. Motor was stuck till I put a long cheater on the crank pulley. I soaked the cylinders for a few day with transmission fluid. Odd thing is no smoke when I got her cranked!! It should have smoked terribly! But it does have 40 lbs on the oil gauge when idling. No bad noises from engine either. Just a few rusted freeze plugs that I gotta replace.

I have a lot of questions I will be asking. So please be patient with me. The charging system isn't working: a few broke wires. Brakes and clutch are not working. And where to get body parts to replace the rusted ones.

All the numbers match though!! Serial #SPL311-14279 on frame and ID tag. The motor has a matching number on the tag too.

Thanks,
Bob

WELCOME young fella :smt006
A 67.5 with matching numbers is probably quite valuable and well worth restoring :) :)
Could you post some pics. so we can see what she looks like now?
There is a heap of information on this site and don't forget to browse the WIKI site for technical information: -
http://www.311s.org/pmwiki-311/pmwiki.p ... n.HomePage
A detailed section for Hitachi/SU carb tuning is there so have a good read
According to my reference, SPL311-14279 relates correctly since the 67.5 SPL311 number range was #11001-17000.
Does the Ammeter work?
How do you know it is not charging?
Some rust repair sections are available from Vendors but they aren't cheap.
Brake and clutch problems may just be bad or non existent fluid.
Time for a drain, flush and refill with fresh fluid.
Oh, if you haven't drained the old and replaced it, I bet it would run a bit better if it had nice fresh fuel too :smt001
Nissanman, just trying to help.

Welcome to the fray Bob. It sounds like you are well on your way to making a runner out of a pile o' parts. Not too good when they sit neglected outside. Lots of great people here and quite a bit of information. Do not be bashful about asking for help. Hang in there as you will have a cool little car once you get all the bugs sorted out.
If you have not registered your car in the registry already-please do so here:

Enjoy!!!

Welcome! Post pics! I suggest that you make a "wish list" of parts and put that in the classifieds wanted section...

Welcome Bob,
I see you are in NW Arkansas , what a beautiful part of the country. I love Arkansas. You have some great roads for driving too, Rte 7 I think it was, great views. There are a few Roadster owners in the midwest also.
Good luck on your project and as others mentioned check the site well as there is a lot of info to help you.

I am trying to figure out the picture deal. I need to learn as I am better at showing a picture for a problem vs. describing it.

The alternator isn't working due to some wires broken on the back of it. Not a big worry at this time.

I changed fluids and found some leaking freeze plugs when doing so. I am working on them right now.

I ran the motor off a small tank with an electric pump. I figure I got a good day or two of work just to get the old fuel system to work.

I will get her on the register soon.

Thanks,
Bob

Here is my interior picture. Looks pretty original except the radio. Shows 59K on the odometer, but that is probably 159 or up.

I don't think the tach is original. It has a chrome ring.

I think I have the picture thing figured out.

Thanks,
Bob

Welcome to the forum Bob. You'll have a fine car when you get her all fixed up. There is person that lives nearby whos father lives in Arkansas. She said her dad knows everything there is to know about Datsun roadsters and has owned and possibly raced a number of them over the years. I do not know her fathers name nor what part of Arkansas he lives in. If I could find out where he lives and if it happened to be close to you, well that would be great.
