Stock Wheel Oddity

Post by ggunder »

I just got my stock wheels back from being powder coated and I noticed something strange. Each wheel has a small metal tab welded (I think) to near the outer edge of the wheel on the side you see. Does anyone know if this is stock (it appears so) and if it was used to balance the wheel? With any luck my 175 70 R14 tires will be here this weekend with their thin whitewall!
Thanks for your help,
GG

Every wheel that I recall looking at has that tab. On some makes of cars, that kind of tab lines up with a full wheel hubcap, so perhaps the plan was to use them on other cars?

Yes, it is to hold the Hub Caps on. The Hub Cap goes over these tabs, it is held on by pressure of the Hub Cap that fits around the outside of these tabs.

The hub cap tabs are not near the edge of the wheel, and there is more than one. He is talking about a tab near the outer edge, every wheel I have seen has it, no idea what it is for....

On my 1500 hubcaps, there is a bracket welded to the hubcap that locates on that tab. It helps to make sure that you get the valve stem centered. At least that is my story...
