OK. I think i need some help diagnosing this problem.
When i startup the engine, at the moment the engine
kicks in and turns over, the whole engine shakes a bit and i hear
a few 'clunk clunk clunks', then the engine purrs. i let it warm up, i blip it, and its fine.
Driving is also great. smooth, no clutch/tranny problems.
I thought it was the tranny mount, that it had gone bad
and the tranny was hitting the walls. not the case.
I got under the car while someone started it, and
everything looks fine. nothing hitting anything.
What else could this be?
It almost sounds like its coming from inside the engine,
near the rear towards the passenger side(???i dunno).
Solvang in less than 2 weeks. help!
Clunk clunk on Startup :(

The first thing I would check is the exhaust all the way back to the rear of the car, some times that can rattle at start up and it can drive you crazy!
Are you still running the Smog stuff on the car or not??
Depending on that which distrubutor are you running Smog/Non-Smog??
Sometimes it could strictly be oil pressure, does the car make that noise only after sitting over night or does it continue to make that noise even after you have driven the car for an hour or so, stop and then try to start it?

The smog stuff is off the car.
The dizzy has been recurved.
The only remaining smog item are the needles in the carbs.
(hoping to pick up nonsmog needles at solvang
)
The car makes the noise EVERY time i start it up. even after
long rides.
The noise is a little louder if it sits overnite tho.
I'll take a look at the exhaust, but it really doesnt sound like
its coming from there. thx.

If it sounds like it is inside the engine, why not get that trusty friend, pull the valve cover off, cover everything with towels and have him start it while you watch. If it is a 2000, the cam could be doing some goofy stuff while the tensioner is out of oil....
If it is a 1600 or 1500, I dunno....

RE:Shake. Rattle and Roll
I was thinking motor mounts too! It is a 1600 so the timing chain death rattle of a 2 liter is out. If they are bad your motor will bounce around pretty good and everything connected to it i.e. the exhaust system. I cannot really think of anything else that might rattle at start-up on a 1600.

The thing with exhaust systems is when they hit frame and rattle, the noise can travel really bad and you might hear it in a totally different part of the car than where it is actually happening.
My 68 has a really bad rattle in the ex system, and it pretyt much goes away as the engine warms up and starts idling better.
Good luck,
Mark
