Well, I just got myself a fairy rough, but workable 1970 1600 of of craigslist. This is my first roadster and second Datsun (I have a 1981, 280zx currently undergoing cancer surgery in my garage)

The body is OK, the PS rocker is fairly rotted and the DS looks like it has been bondoed. A little bit of rust on the rear quarters, but that is the main extent of the rust that I can see in a quick inspection, I am sure that I will find plenty more when I get into it. The main issue with the body is the rear trunk is caved in a bit, apparently it rolled into a pole. The bumper is pretty much toast, but I should be able to bang the body out.

The interior is fairly shot, but I did get a soft top frame and ratty tonneau. The hard top is in descent condition

The good is that the engine runs great. It has the GM alternator conversion and a petronix distributor conversion already. It starts right up in 15 degree weather here in CO. PO claims to get 35 mpg, but will have to verify.

I will post pics shortly when i get a chance to snap a few.

I have been reading through the forum and really appreciate the knowledge base here.

I my first official questions about my brakes and my ignition switch posted over in the general forum if anybody would like to reply.

Well anyhow, just wanted to say HI.

Hey Justin-welcome to the wonderful addiction of roadster ownership. There is a club in Colorado called WyCROC. http://www.wycroc.org/ Ask away and some one will try to help.

Thanks for the welcome.

Here are some not so great quality cell phone pics of my project. I will put up better ones when the wife returns with the camera.

Just a pic of the front:

Here is the badly rust ps rocker with the beginnings of an attempt to fiberglass over the rust by the PO:

Here is the bashed in rear:

Hi Justin,

I am relatively new to the forum myself. Believe me, there are plenty of people here at 311s.org who will be willing to help as much as possible. No question is considered silly. The only silly question, is the one that is not asked.

Fire away

Enjoy your car.

Hi Justin - So you bought Jeff Butler's car. Cool and congrats. Good luck with it and if you have the time and patience, you will be able to transform it. If you can weld, I recommend removing all the fiberglass done by Jeff and making (strong) metal patch panels especially along the rockers. The car needs alot of TLC but it is a great car.

I am south in Colo. Springs, so at some point we will all get together, once the weather cooperates!

My best- Yasin

Howdy. Great to see that there are a few guys in CO that are working on Roadsters. I made the deal on mine tonight (1970 1600) and should be picking it up next weekend. Body was repainted, 99.5% rust free (of course, that will probably change once I get into it). It currently doesn't run but looking forward to the challenge.

Hey Justin,

Welcome from a fellow 1970 1600 owner.

I'm curious if your car has the same type of smog modifications as my California car. Besides a smog pump, air injectors, anti backfire valve (all of which I have removed) my car seems to have modified carbs, air cleaner, intake manifold and distributor.

I also have an additional plastic overflow tank on the passengers side for the radiator that I have not seen on other cars.

I'm just curious what other 1970 cars came equipped with in other states. California had some pretty tough smog rules back in the 70s.

Anyway, welcome to the group.

Cheers,

Rich
