Straight line dissapointment

Post by nomadtrash »

Last night I ran the car down the track a few times. It had some fuel supply issues during the last autocross which I tried to fix. There isn't a good place around the house where I can do full throttle so I went to the local drag strip on Fun-N-Grudge night. $15 to run as many times as you want till 2:00 AM. The tech guy gave me a hard time because I didn't have arm restraints, my harness was expired, and there was no windshield. They were running tech on a bunch of bikes at the same time. I asked him if the bikers had belts, windshields, and arm restraints. Anyway, the track owner was digging my car and told the tech guy to let me pass.

The car didn't want to burn out well. It started going sideways almost immediately. I didn't have a buddy to hold it for me. At the line it had massive wheelspin. It would hook atabout 1/2 throttle but at any point I pushed the pedal to the floor it lit the tires up. I guess I'm going to have to work on the rear end a little. The limited slip is pretty open so I'll pull it out and shim it tighter. I may get some new tires with a softer compound. It may have the rear axle not straight. I measured the wheelbase with a tape measure and it looked pretty close. I'm going to pick a point on the frame and do a really precise measurement. I may drop the rear spring rate from 280 down to 150 or less. It was a squirrely beast with several side to side tank slappers near the end. I ran four runs before I left in frustration. The best was 9.14. I ran a couple of nines and a couple of tens. Not what I expeceted.

I'm going to fix the traction problem and get some new safety gear before I go back. I may bolt a 6" tall piece of plexiglass on the dash mount bolt holes to simulate a windshield. I may also install a 10" rear lip spoiler to hold it down on the fast end of the track.

Is that 9.14 time a quarter mile time? If so, why would you be disappointed in that time? That' haulin!

No, it was 1/8. That is somewhere around 14.45 in the 1/4. It would have been so much faster if it would have hooked up. I couldn't push the gas down at all even in third at 80 mph. I do expect nines in the 1/4 when I figure out the traction issue.
