Newbie in Louisiana needs a body!

Post by peduncular »

A couple of months ago, I picked up a rather ugly (but cheap) 69 2000 from a backyard near me. The seller said that motor had been overhauled just before it was parked due to terminal rust in 1991. I honestly didn't believe him, but turns out he was telling the truth, as the car runs great. The brakes are ruined, but you can just drop the anchor through the holes in the floor whenever you want to stop.

The only panels that are not bondo covered foam (seriously, like Great Stuff foam) are the hood and the trunk. Everything else is coated. There are areas where the bondo is over 1/2" think. LARGE areas.

I am not afraid of fixing rust, but this is terminal. The chassis actually looks okay. Anyone have any leads in the south? I am in Louisiana.

They are out there, just a matter of looking and dumb luck. Amazingly I was the only bidder on rustfree 70 body shell in Massachusetts, need it like a hole in the head, but brought it home yesterday and it's my new project. Keep looking, it will turn up. Craig Halstead just posted a "come and get it" in Virginia on the list, maybe able to piece one together from his large collection. Worth a call.

Be patient.

Last year I purchased a 69 1600 from a sheriff in Nevada who found it in the high desert where it had been sitting for 20 years. I consider it a real bargain at $700 since it was virtually rust and dent free. Not much rubber left on it though but the chrome parts were remarkably bright. The very faded hard top is salvageble as are a few mechanical parts. Any one want a free 4 spd transmission? Gauges? ??

Go desert!

This one was just listed on this forum - body, says little rust, with no engine/transmission.

It's in North Carolina.

Cool, thanks, I'll e-mail. I missed the one on Craigslist over in Texas. Darn.

Hi Fred,

Where in Louisiana are you? I went to high school and college in Baton Rouge. Got my first roadster there - a '70 1600.

Also got my first ride in a race-prepped 2000 with one of the Alessi brothers - they built some fast 510's, Z's and roadsters!

The deep south is tough on old cars - they just seem to melt away.

did you find a body yet? I'm in Virginia and can help you out with that. have a 69 1600 Georgia roadster here with 55k original miles and very decent body that might fit the bill for you. still have a bunch of free roadsters available but not much for decent body panels on them. also have a very solid 68 2000 last driven 3 1/2 years ago available, numerous other worthwhile project cars too including a few 67.5 2000's and a couple race roadsters as well as one of the prototype 1500's, a 35k original mile 66 1600, a 20k original mile 68 1600, 78k original mile 69 2000, 70k original mile 70 2000, and on and on....along with buildings full of used parts....
