Inherited 67.5 1600 San Francisco

Post by drewnamis »

Hi my name is drew and I'm inheriting my cousin's 1600. Just went to look at the car; he gave me the pink, but I'm not ready to pick it up yet.

My cousin is the original owner, and the car has about 118k on the chassis and engine. He says it's been in 1 accident (drivers side rear quarter) and the radio, mirrors and the paint aren't original, but all other parts are. Obviously the car could use a little freshening especially for the interior.

Couple of questions: Is this a 5 main 1600 or a 3 main?
Can any sharp eyes find anything else that isn't original (not a trick question, my cousin isn't the most knowledgable about cars.) Obviously, this ignores stuff like wires and battery and tires, which are wear items.

He says the choke cables need adjustment. This is my first carb'ed car; is that complicated?

And a pic of my daily driver a 91 Miata that was turboed then ITBs, and now going stock, so I can spend my energy and resources on the Datsun.

I don't believe the driver side seat is original. :P

Looks like you've got yourself a good base to go from.

The mirrors aren't originals. And as far as I know the engine should be a 5 main.

Drew -

You have an excellent Roadster to work with!

Looks fairly complete with exception of the items you mentioned. If the numbers match it will be a 5 main motor. Good for a stroker 2000 project. I find the 3 main motor rev faster - personal preference.

I have an '89 Miata, # 000366 with 60K miles. You will find the Roadster to have a more solid feel then the Miata. Both are a lot of fun to slide around the corners, but the Roadster does 180's much better. Adjust that hand brake up and have fun

Don't worry about jumping in and work on the Roadster. They are very simple and the carbs are easy to work with. Lot of help on this forum and the Roadster mailing list. If you get flustrated with the carbs you can send them off to one of the guys for a rebuild, polish, tune.

Hey, I will be in SF next week. My nights are open if you want to meet up and talk Roadsters. Doing my best to stay out of the hotel......
