If it weren't for autocrossing and not wanting to be in a modified class, I would be investigating an engine swap myself. But on the other hand, the real reason I got into Datsuns in the first place was that nobody knew what they were back then. I always go for the unusual over the everybody-and-their-dog-has-one routine.

But if I did it, it would have to be a Nissan engine, and to me, the SR20 is more desirable than the SR24, just because I'd be keeping the displacement the same, even though the technology is newer. I have nothing really against turbos, but it's kinda like running nitrous, cheating. I've seen clean turbo installations, and I can appreciate the work and ingenuity that goes into it, but I like all-motor over power-adders.

Just my take on this.

SR24? uhhhh....

I think Bucky was referring the KA24 found in the USDM 240sx...Similar setup as the SR20, but it has a steel block, more displacement and is built for torque...It was developed for truck use. TR

RE:1600 Race Car

Post by S Allen »

I think I will stick with the 1500 for the swap. There is not a lot of demand for a '66 1600 race car so I will probably end up parting it out and keeping some of the stuff for spares. I hate throwing in the towel on it but it is just too exspensive of a hobby for me. And time is an issue as well. I have way too many projects as it stands now. If VARA were in Northern California I would keep it to race with them several times a year. Such is life.

I have only ridden in Derek's 1600 so I don't have much else to compare to, but the turbo KA24DE conversion I'm building is a shitload of fun. The thing is only making 5-7 pounds of boost (according to the gauge) but the moment it comes on boost the car steps sideways. Keep in mind, of course, the car is still wearing the stock bias ply tires that have got to be 20 years old at least (it's a wonder they hold air).

I had a U20 powered early Datsun pickup truck when I was in college and getting those SU's to work right was almost a daily affair. The benefits of a modern motor with fuel injection are just unbeatable.

I saw this on the Dime Quartely Classifieds just now and thought I might bring it to this forums attention.

"KA24DE totally complete engine swap!!
This is a repost: Lower price! $450 Firm This is a complete twin cam s13 KA24DE engine swap. It includes engine, transmission, all wiring and electronics, and other extras removed from the s13 240sx such as all intake tract stuff, downpipe, etc. The car it was removed from had 120k miles on it, and was a 91. I want $450 firm for this setup. It is hand picked by myself and comes with everything you will need from the donor car for the swap. Ultra complete! Even have a 240sx fuel pump to go with it.

It was posted there on 21st, so not sure it's still there, but those that are interested it's worth an email or call.

Alvin,

How is your project coming along? I saw it with the motor & trans. in it a while back. When do we get to see you driving it?

Alvin,

When I saw it on a lift a couple of month's ago, it seemed someone was serious. They were working on it, not like the person ( who will remain nameless ) said he would. How is the progress? Engine swaps take a lot of time.

Shasta this year?

RE:Alvin's Swap

So Alvin, I wondered what happened to you. Sorry to hear it has not gone well. What engine are you swapping any way? An SR20 or the KA? Sorry I missed it if you already have said. I mean I cannot even get where Lou Smaldino lives right. <FRESNO> :? Hang in there as I am sure you will get much enjoyment out of it once it is all said and done. <EDIT>Never mind-I went to your Webshots. SR20!
