So, you guys got me all fired up about the SR20 swap. I think what I need to look for is an S14 SR20DE non-turbo--correct? Does it matter whether it is RWD or FWD? A front clip is the best way but what are the minimum components I need? Motor, tranny and ECU? Thanks.

It is a fun and rewarding project, you'll enjoy it!
Only the RWD will work. The FWD is transverse mount and not for roadsters!
Besides the major players bolted to the engine, you want a complete, uncut engine harness, the ECU, transmission and shift linkage. If you do not get a front clip, ensure that the MAF has not been banged around and is included. You'll probably want the downpipe at least as far as the o2 sensor. Do not overlook the importance of the wiring harness, just the engine section goes for hundreds of dollars on eBay...
I recommend the front clip, there is nothing like hearing your engine run and idle at temp prior to shelling out cash. You will almost make up the price difference selling off the stuff you do not need and you get lots of bonus wiring!
You have the choice between S13, S14 and S15. Engines are basically the same with increasing horsepower due to variable valve timing and other improvements. Cost increases, too...All of the engines are called SR20DE unless you opt for the turbo, SR20DET. Not sure what the SR stands for, but 20 is short for 2000, D for Dual Cam, E for Electronic (not sure if that's ignition or injection), T for turbo...A quick web search for Nissan engines and SR20DE will pull up lots of info...
I recommend talking to Michael S. He can provide everything you need and knows how to make it work (and he is a genuinely nice guy)...Any questions about the install, feel free to ask Alexi! Just kidding, you'll be able to ask either of us and pick the best way! TR

Everything TR said is correct!! You can count on a front clip vs motor setup (like what I have) to cost about $500-$1000 more plus extra freight. This was the experience I had when looking. Most shops wanted $1700 for a s13 sr20de and about $1750 sr20det (no front clip) and front clipped cars were going for about $2500-2800. Now there are also different years to the motors signified by the color of the valve cover. Red top 91-93, black top 93-95 turbo, silver non turbo (or so) then S14 96-98 Black top turbo, silver non turbo, 99- present S15 black top turbo, siver non turbo. I think that I am mostly correct. If you buy a s13 they generally get $200 or so over the red top because it is a newer model year motor but it is idenitcal to the redtop.
If you are interested I have a list of sites that I collected that you can price shop. When I saw the one I bought for only $1400 I knew it was a good deal. I could always check with the person I bought mine from to see if knows of anyothers, or check with Micheal.

Well, I emailed Michael last night and he is giving me a great deal on an S13 SR20DE complete setup. I just need to work out the details. The cool thing about it is I have a later frame('69 2 liter) to work on with no body in the way. It is only 130 HP but that works for me. It is not how fast you can go in a straight line but how well you drive the twisties.

That's very cool news Steve. The "true" 130hp will feel like a solex motor that runs great every day and costs the same as the dang carbs! And it will get great mileage, etc. etc. etc...

Well, I do not think this swap will happen too fast but I am pumped up about it. I will make sure the ex-1500 stays in the back of the pack in case something comes flying off at an inappropriate time.
I cannot wait to get rid of the drum brakes all the way around. Trust me I am sure I will be asking lots of questions.

BTW Steve, the S13 version of the SR20DE engine makes 140hp, my 130hp that I quoted you was rear wheel horsepower, not crank power.

Yeah, the light bulb went on after seeing TR's turbo that an engine swap section might be a handy place to keep such discussions. I was kind of thinking about this a year or so ago.(The engine swap that is.) After seeing TR's turbo it sort of pushed me over the edge.
For what I paid to build the stroker and the cost of putting a fuel injected SR20 in instead is pretty much a no brainer. Besides the fact that all of the roadsters I have were pretty much junk when I got them and probably would have ended up as parts and scrap metal or worse yet-rusting away into oblivion<SP>. Stock is nice but not for me.
