headlamps

Post by Steve »

I have heard that Cibie makes an excellent replacement headlamp for Roadsters. I have looked at the Cibie website but am not sure which lamp to order. Does anyone know?
Thanks,
Steve

I bought Cibie headlamps for our 240Z when they were still illegal in California. They work(ed) great! So great I got busted  and had to put the sealed beams back in. Temporarily. Long enough to get it signed off.

I was so impressed with their performance I bought a pair for our mini-van in 1989. Those were the rectangular ones, so they didn't work quite as well as the 7" round ones did. But they were still head and shoulders above the stock ones.

If you go to Serious Auto's website, you can order them, but they ARE a bit pricey.

What they show for the "E Code" beam pattern is just what I saw. I would really recommend using relays and heavier gauge wire to run the lights so you get full power to those H4 bulbs. If the reflector is glass, you might be able to run brighter bulbs, but then you might have to upgrade the alternator, too.

Daniel Stern (I don't think he's the actor) has an excellent website that has to do with all aspects of lighting. There is a TON of information on the site, and I highly recommend it.

That is where I got my Cebie's from too. I upgraded the wiring to the lamps with new 14-gauge wire and relays, and then I installed the 80/100w bulbs. What a difference! I actually like driving my car on those cool summer nights now.

For a more detailed description of my wiring...I ran a 12 gauge wire from the hot post on my alternator (my battery is in the trunk) to a second 4 post fuse box I mounted on the passenger fender. Each fuse serves a separate circuit, hi beams, low beams, driving lights, and electric fan. From there I ran a 14 gauge wire to 4 relays, again, high, low, driving and fan. Using the original circuits to switch the relays. Then 14 gauge wire out to the lights. I bought new H4 connectors at the auto parts store, but they only used 18ga wire, so I disassembled them and used the housing to attach my own wires and clips. It would probably be easier and equally as cheap to order new sockets from the website above. I aimed them using my white garage door and a flat section of driveway. They work great, and I still have not been flashed even with the high beam bulbs in.
