what's a 311?
haha, hey folks, hows it going!!
my name is kevin, im from northern california in the s.f. bay area. fixing cars has been a hobby for 5 years going on 6 now.. and is now a full-time job..
my first baby is a 1990 acura integra which has most of the 5 years of work in.. right hand drive conversion, japanese engine & tranny, supercharged & more stuff here & there.. and also where i got my nickname "tegboi" figure i'll just keep that name on here aswell..
so datsun roadsters, a neighbor in the area where i work had one, i checked it out for a while, saw it sit for months, then saw it running with a fiat engine, then ran out of time for his hobby and he wanted to sell it. i couldnt afford it, and i wanted to do more to one.. then i then started seeing them more often, magazines, online pics showing up in friend's photo albums, and a few on the road in Alameda near my workplace..
at that point, i really wanted to have one.. did a little bit of research, found some for sale, talked to Michael and decided i will have one for sure.
purchased a '66/'67 roadster shell from Michael Emery from http://www.luchalibreracing.com/
im working on it, needs alotta loving.. needs some bodywork, all front suspension & spindles, misc. pieces here & there, a hood, grille and the list goes on.. hahaha but plans for it is to have it running first. with whatever i can find. Then later on is to have a KA24 in it, at least until i source a decent priced sr20det for it.. clean everything up & out.. and take it out to the track every chance i get..
i hope i can learn alot on these boards, meet some great folks, and go out to some mt. shasta datsun meets or any bay area events/meets someday, whenever i get this beaut together.. hehe
i'll catch you guys around and i hope for a wonderful stay..

HAHA! I probably saw you at G2IC meet last october.
I showed up late and all the food was gone.
I don't post up there much, mostly lurk when I am on.
All my money is going into my roadster.
Here are some pics(red one) and vids:

Someone finally took it to recycle the fiberglass.
The roadster looks tired with a few rust spots and fading paint, but drives like a champ.
At least til last weekend. It's time for a tranny rebuild and I might as well stroke the motor at the same time.
After that, maybe megasquirt w/ ITB's.

if he didnt sell it yet, and brings it around like he said he would if he still has it, i'll make sure to get pics.
i think the old motor that came from there was just a deadweight. i popped the valve cover off, and it was all rusty looking & doesnt look like it would run.. hahahaha
and i heard it somewhere that a fiat motor was a simple replacement motor to throw into a roadster..
i'll ask when i see him..

I am revising the Engine Swap FAQ, so I'd love to know where you heard/read that. Details and pics would be awesome.tegboi wrote:and i heard it somewhere that a fiat motor was a simple replacement motor to throw into a roadster.

Re: what's a 311?
I'm sorry to bring back a 6 year old thread..
I finally brought this car with me to Los Angeles. Literally a month after I created this thread, I received a call, and was asked to move to Los Angeles that week. Full time work, beautiful city, great space for self improvement. Now that I'm pretty much all settled in, full time job, overworked, not underpaid that much, I finally had time to drive up north to my mom's house, and quite literally dig this Roadster out of my mom's garage. From the years I've been gone, I would come back a couple times the first year, some more the next, less and less the next, and this weekend's trip was the first in about 8 months.
Anyways, here's to a couple of pictures from this weekend.

Borrowed a family member's Ford F-150, rented a uHaul Auto Transport, and had a group of buddies help me push the Datsun into an auto transport trailer, and it was quite a job. The car still has no front suspension, arms, wheels, etc. So we eventually got it on, and secured. First time ever driving with a trailer, and with several friends wanting to buy the project from me, the experience of driving the car 400 miles to bring it home is going to really make it hard for me to sell. So I already told all friends I will have to own another Roadster, to be able to sell this one.
I hope to learn alot from this forum, I currently have 3 other cars that one or the other will require some work, maintenance, upgrades, and all project type of cars. Also have 3 motorcycle/small motorcycle projects going on too, but for some reason I still wanted to bring the Datsun into the mix.
Dave - I think the "Datsun" I thought I saw in the past with a Fiat motor, was actually a MG Midget. Not 100% sure, but I think another friend actually bought that car, but not sure if he kept it long.
twinight - The car sure does have lots of filler all over the car, I'm afraid to strip it all down, but at the time was told the car was used previously for SCCA competition. Back then, I would've gotten the car in running condition, and keep driving it as hard as I could. Now I want nice bodywork, clean trim, everything proper. So this is a rough spot, we'll wait and see what happens. What do you know of this car's history/repair work done? One spot I see that has quite a bit of filler, is the rear left quarter panel/tail panel.
The car is still a beautiful start for me to work on. I still want to get it together, and see what I can make of it.
So, 6 years later.. I'm back..

Awesome! Welcome back!! If you need bits, there are lots of guys that have donor cars lying about. Since you are starting with a blank slate, decide what you want before you start getting into it too hard. Write it down and make a plan!
