U20 rebuild Cost Question

Hi Everyone:

I am knew to the site and thanks for all of the great archived info found on here, it has been a real help.

I recently purchased a '66 1600 and after getting some of the suspension rebuilt I now have found issues with the engine. I was looking at building a stroker but I am now considering swapping in a U20. I have a lead to buy a U20 parts car with full engine, tranny, radiator, etc., etc., for $500. I know for a fact that the engine ran as recently as 2 years ago but what has happened since then, I cannot say…. For whatever it’s worth, I would put in the U20, but leave the stock 4 speed tranny since I don't want to start cutting too much.

I don't have a very good understanding right now as to the costs involved in rebuilding or buying a rebuilt U20 (or a stroker for that matter). However, does $500 seem reasonable or should I very quickly run away from this purchase? Thanks in advance for any and all help!

No engine rebuild is going to be cheap. Timing chain setup alone was upwards of $1200.00 but I believe you can find them for around $600.00 now. $500.00 is not bad for a parts car. If you do go with the U20 please use the 5 speed. There is no cutting involved. It should drop right in motor and tranny. You will have to redo the tranny mount for the 5 speed. Not a big deal. If the motor has good compression you might get away with just timing chains and new gears. If it is a non-runner you are getting into the unknown until you try to fire her up. Good luck!

Don't you have to cut out the slot where the shifter comes through the tunnel?

Yes, you do as the shifter comes up in a different spot from the 4 speed. Still not a big deal to do. You can always put it back if for some reason you ever decide to put a 1600/4 speed back in there. Good point.

Thanks guys for the info, it is very helpful. I had thought that there was more cutting involved to install the 5 speed, but if it is minimal I think I have to reconsider.

So, now I guess I am a little stuck between doing a full U20 (w/ tranny) rebuild and swap, or stroke it using a G15 crank that I located. I like the G15 route since it keeps the car more stock which I personally like, but obviously I wouldn't get as much of a performance gain. Decisions, decisions... :?
