New owner, Needs advice

I am the happy new owner of a Datsun Roadster 1967.5, 1600. The dash has split gauges, black dash, all original except tail lights,has all chrome, no rustand runs good. I purchased the car for $1000. The problem is the registration says it is a 1968. Where on the body may I find a identification # because the I.D plate is missing. How were the plates stamped for the 1967.5? Did they read 67 or 68? Every thing on the car says it is a 1967.5. I am a happy confused owner

Congratulations! Sounds like you got a winner!!

The ID tag on most 67.5 cars did not have the model for year line, so it would not help. There was no other indicator on the body. The VIN was stamped into the frame right below the washer bag. You may have to scrape some crud off to read it, and some were very light stampings anyway, but that is where it is.

Wow, sounds like you got a great deal on a running roadster. The only other place you might be able to find the true VIN # is on the frame, drivers side near the steering box. It is stamped into the top of the frame in that area. It is very hard to read but trust me it will be there. The only problem with this is someone may have changed the frame. Hopefully this will not be the case. The VIN range for the 1967.5 1600 is SPL311-11001-17000**From engine No. R-40001--Sept. 1967. Check your engine number as well. It is stamped into the block on the passengers side towards the front right under the head. Welcome and enjoy the car.

Doh!! I finally realized that you submitted your car to the registry-thank you. It looks like you already have the correct VIN# SPL311-12668. As Sid stated he has as good as OEM VIN Plates for sale. I believe for a nominal fee he can even stamp the vin and engine number on the plate for you. You should see four screw holes with the hood open on the passenger side right in front of the cowl. That is where the VIN plate belongs. There was no year designation just VINs. Here is a sample :

I had a similar situation when I bought my Roadster. The registration, the previous owner, and the original bill of purchase from the dealership (can you believe I even have that!) all say that my car is 1969, but I went to www.datsunroadster.com (Rallye Ent.) and it has a section called "what year is your car really?" and my car is actually 1968.

I found out that there was a big class action lawsuit in 1970-71 because dealers were selling the "leftovers" from the previous year's models as the current year's models.......go figure!

Give the website a try, it gives you all the ways to check the true year.

With the vin number posted, and the overall description of the car, it is undoubtedly a 67.5 - unless someone has done a very convincing fake! I think that you got a fantastic deal unless there is some horrible issue that has not been found. Even if it is there, it is not stopping the car from driving, so how bad can it be?

On the tags, I certainly can stamp the tags to make them look right. I hand stamp them, so the numbers are not perfectly inline or spaced - just like they did it in Japan in the 1960s....

It was pretty common for foreign car dealers to sell left overs as the next model year. My 1964 1500 is titled and tagged as a 1965. There is no doubt that it is a 1964 though...
