break calipers

Post by scott caputo »

I just picked up a '66 roadster and one of the front break cylinders is leaking. I read someplace that there are a multiple of caliper models, but the ones I've got don't seem to match anything I think I'm supposed to be looking for. They have Dunlop, and what I think is Sumtomo, stamped on them. Also, how can you determine what size they are? I'm looking for some if anyone has any. email me scottcaputo@hotmail.com

Thanks

Scott, those are the stock calipers. You can get replacement cylinders from the vendors or perhaps the dealer. Or you can get stainless resleved units from Carl Jaeger, or have them resleeved by the specialty machine shop of your choice. Rebuild kits are still available, so that is a permanent fix. If you want big brakes, you can do a Volvo caliper conversion. The details are on 311s.org...

Brakes

Post by SLOroadster »

Rebuilding the calipers is easy. Use an aircompresser to pop the piston out of the caliper. Rally sells rebuild kits that work. If there is some pitting in the caliper, you can try to sand it out then repolish the inside. This it what I did and mine don't leak (2 years and havn't lost a drop). This is the cheap way to do it. The best way is to have them resleved (the ones from Carl are nice). A big brake kit is not really needed. With a good set of pads, your car will stop plenty well. The rotors are 11.6 inches (I think) and they are 2 piston calipers.
Another thing to get is a firewall brake brace (Mike Young at Datsun Sports has them.) They work really well. More than 95% of all roadsters have craked firewalls below the brake master and this causes flex instead of brake power.

That brake brace is for the 67.5 and later dual master cylinder cars and will not work on the early single master cylinder cars.

Thanks for the info. One more question. Is there any way to use the brace at the firewall on a 66', by changing to a different master cylinder? Thanks again.
