Late (Type B) steering box spline size

Post by fairlane292 »

I know the early (Type A) box has an 11/16 36 output spline. Can someone please tell me what the size and spline count is on the later (Type B) box? Thanks, Jim

Jim, you are correct for the early Type A spline...11/16 x 36... the LATE RCB steering shaft: (U-Joint end 0.571") 9/16" x 28 tooth spline.
I know this because I swapped the early Type A box for the later Type B RCB box, into my '67.

Oh, very cool Mike. Seems kinda tough to source the B box, pitman, idler and spacer. I’d like to try it but I doubt I’ll find sourcing it practical.
Were you driving with early box then changed so that you would experience the difference? If so, how would you describe the difference?

I’m actually doing a Toyota Prius EPAS swap in mine and was asking about the spline size because ultimately I’d be transitioning to 3/4 DD and then to the Prius unit where it exits the firewall. While I’d like to try a B box I’m thinking the driving feel difference will likely be minimized with the EPAS. My main reason for all of this is for light easy steering at parking lot speed. Thanks for the info and response. Sorry, just getting back to this now. Jim

This site might be interesting or useful to you. It helped me with my install...BTW, I used my original '67 pitman arm and idler box.....no issues for me after 15,000 miles.
