Newbie with an SRL

Post by DAL14053 »

Hey all,

I have had a 1970 Z for some time now and have been looking at the Roadster as a potential second car. So I found one, 1970 SRL 2L

Some nice folks inherited it from a passed father in law but really were not into it. I decided to get it as it has minimal bodywork needed.
While not a show car by any means it has solid floors and trunk bed. sure there are some rust spots but no flinstones features.

Going to need some mechanical work but that is more my forte. We'll see how it goes, just getting started.
One thing for sure the parts for this are way more than parts for my Z. :smt102

Here some pic's....bringing her home.

Welcome to the forum, very cool score, looks pretty solid from a decent distance. Good on ya, lots of fun to be had.
Don't start by aiming to perfection. I remember crawling in under my new purchase, and saying, "strangest fasteners I have ever seen holding fenders on"...
Turns out they were spot-welds holding the front fenders on.
That was 20+ years ago. Driving it like stink ever since.
Roadster makes a great second car, since you are in WA, keep an eye out for someone giving up on a hardtop, as even if rarely used, if it saves you from one rainy season and you tie it up against the garage roof it has saved you a ton of work. (and hardtop are "cool", I am using it now because I am getting too much sun)

Thanks Fergus, It is for sure a 20 footer, and I had no intentions of perfection. Like you, I want to drive it not show it. Although shows can be fun amidst all the Fords and Chevy's Datsuns tend to get a lot of attention. My Z does for sure. All a similar story, "I had one of these in high school"

Before this purchase I ran into a Z and Roadster hoard for sale. The man had passed and his widow locked all the parts in the garage. Sold the cars but had all the extras. Well It came time to clean out the garage and I was first in line. More for Z parts. Three truck loads later I have a hard top, 4 soft top frames, and 6 large plastic totes full of Roadster parts. Some NOS but mostly good used stuff.

When I bought the car the ad stated "extra rims" Turns out they were brand new in the box Panasport Z Lites.
There was a new clutch and pressure plate in the trunk too. New shocks one the car and a new exhaust as well.

SO I think I am starting of well. Just every little piece I don't have and need to source seems to command small fortune. lol

Good for you. There are some pricy bits for sure, (and some creative work-arounds, especially once bone-stock is strayed from) but lots who have collected much like the stash you discovered.

Thanks Fergus, I do a lot of research before reaching out for help. Same As I did with my Z.

Even with the parts hoard I still need other things.

As I go through the car I found the carbs were not in sync when engaging the throttle. The Vacuum advance was none functional. I put in new points condenser, rotor and cap and vacuum diaphragm off one of me Z distributors. The old cap was way loose and expect it was the wrong one. The Vac adv was capped. 7.5 degree weights though. I wont' know how all this works until I start and time it.

I am sure there will be more issues along the way.

Slowly but surely........

Welcome to the forum and the mystique of Roadster ownership. With the "extra rims": Z Lites; and 6 totes of 'unobtanium' SRL related bits, it might be said that the dedicated PO is smiling down upon you with great satisfaction!!
This forum is a super source of SPL/SRL passion.
Enjoy your 'grandpa of the fabulous Z'.
Dave.

Thanks TriniGriffin,

I have ordered up a few things from the vendors and will be diving in before long. Still waiting on a couple of parts to be delivered.
We are headed into the wet season here in Washington soon, so there will be more time to tinker around in the shop.
