New 311 driver in Virginia

Post by FlowerGirl »

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum after lurking here a while hoping to find a 1600. I just bought one from another 311s member, a 1970. I smiled all the way home. :D

Besides finding enough time to read all the great posts, my most pressing needs are to solve a seat height issue and get visors. Unlike the people in the posts I've found so far on seat height, I'm not looking to lower the seats, I need to raise them because I'm short. The seller raised them as high as he could (thank you) and it's helped, but I'm still a little low in the car. And it was bright and sunny the days I've driven the new lovely and boy, do I need visors! 8) I would appreciate any advice.

Great site and great reading! So happy to have found it. Now I just need to figure out how to add a signature.

Welcome from someone who drives on the correct side of the road
Seats can be raised fairly easily by placing spacers e.g. metal/plastic tubing between the floor pan and the seat rails.
The fasteners are usually long enough to accommodate a reasonable lift.
The 240/260/280Z cars used large plastic spacers to achieve the same thing.

Welcome! We love new members and enjoy hearing about their Roadster adventures. Regarding the seats, the spacers should help. On the underside of the car, try to add some relatively thin but wide washers (like a 50cent piece wide) to the stud to help spread the load/force energy over a wider area in case of an accident... they help keep the nuts/studs from pulling through the floor. They may already be there as they have been recommended for years, but if not it's a good "while I was in there" thing to do.

That’s a nice 1600 FlowerGirl, enjoy your new to you ride. 1600 are sweet cars, a lot of fun easy on fuel and pretty reliable if you stay on top of the maintenance. Welcome to 311s, the is a great tech wiki section with lots of helpful information and tips.

Thank you, Dave. I’ve just begun to read all the good articles. Hoping to stay ahead of the maintenance and avoid newby mistakes. I also need to work on a quick traffic-light explanation of what a 1600 is!

The 1600 refers to the engine size, 1600cc (roughly). The other similar model is a 2000. A larger engine model. The 1600 is more common. Both look the same from the outside.

Yes, I stop at a traffic light and there’s bound to be a question, ranging from, “It looks sort of like a Triumph or an MG, but what is it?” to “I didn’t know Datsun made a car like that!” to “What is a 1600? A lighter version of the 2000?”

I have a few seconds to answer before the light changes. So sort of like an elevator speech!

Welcome, Flower !
I've also had to answer, and explain the more common question I get, ...."What is a Datsun ?" :?
