1600 Cylinder Head Valve Guides

Post by Curtis »

I cleaned up my 1600 cast iron head and found that the guides have been knurled. Cast iron can be be rather unfriendly to being knurled.

Obviously the guides are pressed in or machined in to my aluminum head. Are the guides steel guides pressed in to the cast head? They are magnetic so not bronze replacements. I can't see any machine marks for a press in.

If they are press in guides they usually have a snap ring at the base where they meet the head.

Mike Young tells me they are not press in on the CI head. Must mean the CI was soft enough to knurl.

Wonder if it can be machined for new guides and what that will cost?

If helpful, if you find guides you want to use we can likely do what ever is needed to get them set. My day job here: https://www.becker6.com
We're obviously doing Porsches but many new guides with each motor and they all need head-specific ream to install the right guides. Dave

It’s possible that you might be able to find some valves with slightly larger stem diameter and then the problem would be solved. Just machine the existing guides to accept the new larger diameter stems.

Cast iron heads have the guides machined right into the head (if they are still stock). They would have to be machined out to size to install proper valve guides.
Talk to your machinist about 'guide liners'.

Um, I don't think I need one hundred. Plus the sizes are 8mm and 9mm. Valves are 8.7mm so question is can these be machined to size. I bought some from Dean.

Machinist seems to know all that stuff.

There are more sizes. It is quite common and the machine shop should be able to get you the 8 you need and install them.

Our mach shop would lathe the OD to size needed of a close guide ...but I believe here there's almost no decent machine shops that do individuals needs ,I couldn't find one 4 yrs ago .
The ones left are swamped for the size place it is & doing mostly truckers eng.and dealerships , with the deck less engines design most heads aren't resurface able or block decked
