1967.5 Center Console / Armrest Question

Post by Florida Roadster »

Would anyone know the reason for the four holes / captive nuts on the armrest of the center console? Mine had foam and vinyl on the top before I stripped it. Was there a different cover that bolted onto the armrest from the factory? Just curious.

On my '65, there is a metal panel that mounts under the lid and uses those mounting holes.
The panel hides the glued down edges of the arm rest and finishes off the underside of the lid nicely.

As a bonus, the parts manual fails to mention it

OK, got it. Mine did not have that lower metal panel. What threw me off was the hole passing all the way through the panel. The screws enter the captive nuts from below, so the only reason for the holes is so the screws don't bottom out? But they have to be the correct length otherwise they would poke out the top. Thanks for the reply.

Yes they are very short csk screws and do not poke beyond the nuts.
You could probably replicate that panel without too much drama from a 3mm sheet of aluminium: that would look just like the rolled edge on the OEM piece

I’m looking at a center console right now and was curious if the 1967’s came with them as an option. I see it mentioned a lot for 1967.5 (and your ‘65 above) and just wanted to check before I buy.

Yes, the '67 Roadster came with a console. Standard equipment, I believe. One of the big selling points of the Datsun was how much great stuff came standard vs optional on other brands. Here is a shot I found on the interweb of a '67 interior. 67.5 only had 5 gauge circles on the dash instead of 7, by combining some into multi-gauges.

Awesome! I was having a heck of a time finding a pic. My dash is a 67.5 so maybe that is what threw me, but that’s a story for another thread…

I jumped on the center console. It needs reupholstering but that shouldn’t be too bad. I do need to find the front aluminum (?) piece for the lock.

Justin,

For any little (or big) used parts and pieces, you could try Mike Young at 415-828-8778. He has a couple of barns and a basement garage full of Roadsters and parts.

Thanks. I’ll reach out to him.

I did score a console that needs refurbishing. It’s missing the lock and ashtray(?) portion. What’s the missing part called so I know what to ask for?

Lock mounting screw center to center is about 1.5”

There is a fantastic online resource at https://www.carpartsmanual.com/datsun/sports-1965-1970
It has factory diagrams and the name and part number for just about everything on these cars. If you go to that page, select "body" and then "instrument & console", you'll see the diagram for these parts. It looks like the car pictured is a 67.5, but I imagine that the part names are the same, though the actual piece may be a bit different.
