Odometer cable
Hey all,
I have a 68 1600. My Odometer gave up the ghost somewhere between Dubuque and Madison on Sunday, and I would like to repair it. I searched the forums and see that there is a cable that needs to be replaced (and it looks like a lot of fun). However, when I search the vendor sites, I find odometer cables for almost all the other models but the 68 1600. I thought the late model gauges were the same. The Speedometer still works fine, although it is about 5 mph fast. Are there two separate cables for this gauge, where can I locate the correct odometer cable for my car (assuming there is one). I was really looking forward to turning my odometer to 00000. Only like 5K to go.
Thanks in advance

Only one cable. Your gauge has died.

Re: Odometer cable
Ohhh, so I need a new gauge? Can they be rebuilt? Maybe a little oil or something?

Re: Odometer cable
My 70 has a little cable going from the odometer to the reset knob. Maybe it is hung up or like was said just broke?

Re: Odometer cable
I guess I have not messed with the gauge at all. I don't think I have ever reset the trip meter on it. Maybe it is hung up. I will try that when I get home. Thanks for the suggestion

Re: Odometer cable
Reviving this thread with a question as to where to get a replacement cable for the trip odometer reset...
The end where it hooks to the back of the gauge appears to slip over a post with a cross hole drilled through and then some type of pin or setscrew top hold it in place.
In the pic below you can see where the cable end broke at the hole .... Doesn't look like there is really enough meat to cross drill again perpendicular to the old hole. ... looks like maybe a new cable is needed.
Anyone know if it is a set screw or a pin that hold them together? My guess was a set screw.
Anyone aware of a vendor that sells this cable? I haven't been successful in my search.

Re: Odometer cable
As I remember, it is a set screw. Something must be hung up in the gauge to cause that kind of damage or the cable wasn't mounted to the dash and was just hanging. If the mechanism is free to turn in the gauge, grind off the rough edges and drill and tap a new hole 180 degrees from the breakout.

Re: Odometer cable
The cable was a bit stiff at first, but after I was able to work it back and forth a number of times it freed up and turns well. I was able to reach behind the dash with my hand and manually reset the trip odometer just using my fingers. I may try to redial and tap the old one, but it would be great if there was a new replacement cable for a reasonable amount.
It almost looks like someone tried to remove it with a Dremel by cutting it off!

Re: Odometer cable
I agree, that looks like someone went at it with a dremel. I know that I have some of those cables lying around.

Re: Odometer cable
I tried drilling and tapping the opposite side, but that din't work out like I hoped. I don't think I got the tap started very well and the depth is very shallow. The there wasn't much thread length left to hold very well and by the time I got the screw biting into the threads, you couldn't get it to slip over the odometer reset post. I was using a 3mmx 1.0 tap. I might have to see what the next larger size tap would do ... can't get much bigger and that was the smallest I had.
If you have one lying around, let me know. Thanks

Re: Odometer cable
I'm confident that I have the cable. I'll dig it out of the storage unit. I'll be in Savannah on the 27th, so I can even deliver it.

Re: Odometer cable
Huge thank you to Sid (spl310) for his generosity!
Sid stopped by today during his busy work schedule while he was "in town" to drop off two options for a replacement odometer reset cable. It says a lot about someone who goes out of their way to keep your needs in their thoughts and go out of their way to help you out.
What a great guy - Thank you, Sid!
