What is it???

Post by Randalla »

Just acquired this Hitachi distributor and I'm trying to find out what it came from. Does not look like 311 distributors I've seen before but perhaps a very early one??? Distinguishing characteristics are:

Rivoted on I.D. plate with what appears to be serial or model numbers (D407-02 and 4050081)

Wire connector for condenser mounted outside body of distributor (rather than inside)

Body looks to be cast iron vs. aluminum

Vacuum canister has a screw on fitting

Anyone have one like this?

Are the guts in the dizzy above a later aftermarket EI or did it come that way? Just curious.

Thanks Nissanman. Had a feeling it might be a early Roadster dizzy. The one I have still has points, unlike the EI version above. I also have the tach drive piece but no spindle.

Greg, I converted the points arrangement to electronic for reliability.
This is the kit I used: -

electronic ignition sensor.jpg
The kit is manufactured by Montgomery Ward & Co and the application is actually for the 1968 and later model CCW rotation Hitachi distributor.
So of course it had to be modified to mount inside the '65 dist.
Custom sensor plate and a bee's dick shaved off the base of the rotor since the reluctor wheel has a thin shoulder on the top.
Also I had to convert the ignition system primary circuit to negative ground since the box outputs a positive trigger to the coil
Anyhoo, it all works wonderfully well and I don't have to maintain those pesky points :D :D
