This is just conjecture as i've never done a brake job on a Roadster, but it's probably to lubricate the caliper pins upon final reassembly so your brakes don't drag.

I believe that the instructions on my caliper rebuild kit told me to coat the rubber rings with the red grease...

Is that like the little red pill that came with new points? I stopped taking those, had a bad trip.
