Rear reflector thread size

Post by ppeters914 »

Does anyone know the thread size on the Everwing rear reflectors, or have a new set they can measure? These reflectors were the same up through June 1969.

I have a used set w/ nuts, and a set I had rechromed that are missing the nuts. The nuts on the used set do not fit the rechromed set. When I check them with a thread gauge, I get conflicting measurements.

#12-28
M5-0.9

The first one is odd. The pitch is definitely 28 (not 24 or 32), but I’m guessing on #12 because the post is real tight in a #10 hole and real loose in a 1/4-inch hole.

Because they’re Everwing, it makes more sense that the thread is metric. However, M5-0.9 is an old deprecated JIS size. I was able to purchase some from Belmetric, but they only kinda sorta fit on the used set and not on the rechromed set. It’s possible the rechroming messed up the threads some, but I don’t want to run a die on them without confirming the thread size. So….

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Thanks,

M5-0.9 is correct, at least for the three sets of Reflectors that I have. The orig. set from my 1967, 1 set still in the box that I purchased from Nissan in 1981 and finally a set from a Vendor early this year. I should say one of my Reflectors from the 1981 purchase apparently came stripped as the original mut that came with it will only start to thread on but locks up. The nut from that Reflector will thread onto the five other Reflectors so the nut isn't the issue.

These nuts are not easy to track down cheap. A few folks in the current / past have sold them on eBay for $9 or $10 per with shipping. Apparently they were used on some 1960's Japanese Motorcycles. I have made some with an M5-0.9 tap chasing 10-32 nuts for my orig. set on my 1967, I was missing one mut. Makes me wonder a bit if the reflectors originally were for motorcycles or maybe even bicycles in Japan and Nissan decided not to reinvent the wheel and just used them off the shelf? I found a couple places down under that have them in bulk but the shipping is pretty ridiculous. I ordered various hardware from Belmetric, I totally missed that they had some M5-0.9.

I believe the originals from the 60s were a different thread. I'd have to go dig them out.

Metric? Is M5-0.9 in there?

When? I sometimes wonder about the quality since the Craftsman brand went through various owners. Of course, the Pro line is still lightyears better than Harbor Freight.
