Early 1600 Console lock bezel question

Post by DAC21 »

Is the clip that retains the chrome lock bezel surround unique to the console or the same as the Door tumbler lock clips? Thanks

Hi Dennis, unfortunately, I'm 531 miles from my car doors, but I did just get a couple of console retaining clips back from zinc plating, so here are a couple of photos that may help you with measurements...

I hope that helps. Good luck.

Thanks Peter, I'll measure out the door lock clips tomorrow and compare.

Edit, not even close to door clips, no need measure.

Shoot, that would have been a nice crossover, I could use a couple more console clips.

Were the console clips larger?

Thanks and good luck.

You might just get some small brake hose retaining clips and hog it out to 13/16" with a grinder. They probably have them in singles at one of the auto parts chain stores.

I'm hoping a couple of folks selling this 1960-1970's MOPAR clip will get back to me on dimensions on the tine's width and depth. Maybe a modification candidate. The top that I marked up probably won't matter other than original aesthetics.

Hey Peter, the linked eBay Seller got back to me. His clip is .798 wide between the tines and the opening length is 1.125 inches. It could well work as is.

Dennis sent over an aftermarket clip and I just tried it out on one of my bezels. It was a little snug, so I pulled the 'legs' like I'd play solitaire with a wishbone, and it sneaks over with just a little pressure. I'd say it works perfectly.

Great find Dennis, and thank you!

Peter,

Glad to hear. If you get a chance and it's not a major inconvenience you might try fitting it in your center console to see if there could be any other interference possibilities?

Hi Dennis,
I did that, and tried it in 2 of my consoles. I didn't take a photo, it's hard to capture, but I can put more effort into a photo tomorrow in the daylight.

I will say that it is quite snug - the interior width is tight, but as I mentioned a 'wishbone-hand-tweak' takes care of that.

The arc of the "spring curve profile" is almost identical, but again a little snug. This is another hand-tweak so it slides on more easily.

The 'pull-tab lip' is similar, but the bend of the new 'lip' is a little bit angled down, I might tweak that with pliers.

The width of the 'pull-tab' is wide, and ideally, I'd do as you suggested - just grind some 45s in there - but that doesn't affect functionality, and not sure if it's worth the trouble - once this is in, it's likely not coming out in my lifetime.

Conclusion: with very little effort this functions as well as original.

Thanks again,
Peter

Yes those tines are pretty close. The height and shape of the cut out looks dead on. Thanks for checking it out.
