2" Exhaust

Post by unklpat »

Not trying to beat a dead horse, but is anyone willing to share opinions on 2" muffler/resonator combo on a U20 system? Thx Pat

Well my friend, what exactly are you asking... flow, fit, sound, cost, sources, mods, options...?

Well Greg, Flow, noise, in that order. I have a leak, and am exploring options. Not too loud, but sounding good. Pat

I highly recommend Jim Tyler’s stainless exhaust. Beautifully made and sounds great!

I know JT exhausts, they look and sound great, and I'd love to have one. I don't have the $, and don't need an exhaust that looks better than the rest of my car. If using aluminized pipe, there should be no rust issues for at least 5-10 years on a car driven in dry weather. I believe there should be an aftermarket solution out there for a resonator and muffler. Is there? Pat

Pat, keeping in mind that exhaust sound is subjective I’ve had more than one comment (usually at an autocross) approving of the sound from my custom exhaust that had a total cost of about $500 a few years ago. It uses a very short Flowmaster straight through muffler in front of the axle and a MBRP resonator behind the axle. I bought a long megaphone tip like what you would see on a VW and cut out a section so that it would have the same end diameter of the OEM tip and the proper size to fit my tailpipe. I also had the muffler shop make another tip without the resonator so that I could interchange them. There is too much snap crackle and pop on deceleration without the resonator for a street driven car for my taste.
There is still a little even with the resonator, but not enough to be objectionable. I am very happy with the sound at all speeds, certainly a touch on the loud side but not obnoxious by any means. Full disclosure, the words spoken out of my wife’s mouth most often are “put in your hearing aids!”
Advice to the younger crowd…protect your ears, hearing loss sucks!!

I remain super happy with the 2" with flex pipe to the Dynomax turbo muffler, 2.25" after that to the "monza" resonator tip. Not loud, very nice DEEP rumble (not tinny) with no snappy pop, great sports car sound. You'll have to come by sometime and hear it. Induction (non SU) is louder but they go together perfectly. In 38 years I've never rusted out an exhaust on this car.

Still thinking about that header but I think mine is the same (hard to tell...it's wrapped in a heat shield).

Thanks guys, that's what I'm looking for. I don't want too loud, but when you accelerate, you know it. Pat

I would do a resonator tip on the end as well. Mine was a Monza but I don't think they make them anymore. Looks like Borla, pacesetter or hedman. They stop the snap sound. I'd get a Hedman from Jegs... reasonable price, the red interior color will go away eventually.

Hey, I'm new here...I know JT exhausts, they look and sound great, and I wish I had one. If you use aluminum-coated tubes, there will be no rust problem for at least a decade on cars running in dry weather. I think there should be a workaround for the resonator and silencer. Drive safe.
