Took it for a drive and parked it. It started melt from the sun!

What kind of rubber/urethane is this? Lol.

It was a mild 70s today. It came with the car… maybe it was cheap urethane. Iono now I got to clean it up…

I think it was the reflections or something.

I've seen NOS tie rod and ball joint boots do that in the bag (never installed). I wonder if the bumper rubber is a similar thing?

Never seen this before. I would guess it's a combination of age, heat and some solvent like ammonia or gasoline. Looks to be only on the leading edge so maybe you drove through a puddle of gas and splashed up onto the rubber?

Probably so. I took it off both sides and cleaned all the mess up. I'm contemplating if I should replace them and wondering if it'll happen again.

There is a hole now that I have a poor fitting rubber grommet in there for now.

Any possibility that the exhaust is somehow heating up that side of the bumper? Is it just the one side melting or both? Seems like a long shot but .....
Ive seen normal. It aint pretty.

Funny you should mention that Tim. Someone here is selling New Old Stock Datsun ball joints that have been sitting in the original wrapper and box for 40+ years. What the hell were these things made of back then?

Looks so much like black RTV, like it's supple & got oil in it
your not kidding right ?
And the BJ Pic...oil eats rubber slowly
Nissan 3" rubber tubes to the air filter , turbo rubber tubes were tough to R&R , one tech started greasing them slightly Instead of using brake clean .... they went soft 18 months later and we had to fix
