Idler box bushing clearance

Post by Habitat.pat »

I’m rebuilding my 70 steering idler box. I bought a replacement idler bushing from Dean & am ready to press it in. The bushing needs reaming once it is installed but I can’t find anything that shows what the clearance should be. I’m thinking.002 to .003” but would rather hear what clearance others are using before I continue.

Peace,
Pat

I think you're right Pat. If you can get your hands on a Machinists Handbook, it'll have some standard clearances.

Thanks, Dan. I heard back from Dean, he says .001 +/- .0005. Seems tight but he should know since he has the boxes rebuilt. I’ll talk it over with the machinist. He mainly does race engines, so close tolerances are an everyday thing.

Dean is correct. This is a greased bearing, the larger clearances (0.002-0.003) would be more in line for a forced oil pressure feed like an engine bearing.
