Turn Signal problem solved

Hi Ladies and Gentlemen,

I Solved the problem with my turn signals. Rather than get all hyper over it, I used some intelligence rather than emotion. It was amazing, it worked quite well.

I reasoned that 1.) my emergency flashers worked just fine 2.) my headlights and taillights etc. worked just fine. Therefore it was not a bad ground. If it was not a bad ground, then it was either in the steering column or the turn signal flasher relay. Since the turn signals worked just fine in November and did briefly work off and on now, the problem was most likely the turn signal flasher relay. Likewise, since it was the original relay, chances are it had seen its' heyday.

I took Lindas' advice and went over to Advance Auto Parts and picked up a Tridon Stant 12volt 2 terminal variable load Flasher Relay # 552 for $2.52 tax included. Put it in this evening, and the turn signals work just fine. Of course nothing is perfect, I have to use a nylon cable tie to hold it up and keep it from hanging down. I thought about puting the new insides into the old canister and screwing it back into place (provided the cnister fits), but it may not be worth the touble, nor it may not fit. The point is they now work.

Hi Tim,

I appear to be having the same issue with my 1969 2000.

Where exactly is this relay? I am hoping I can locate it without having to pull too much of the car and the simple replacement you describe will fix it.

I was having a similar problem. Lights were inconsistent when I got the car in July. But they seemed to get a little better as I poked around, not really finding anything obvious. I printed out the wiring diagram and was ready for a weekend of hide and seek for an electrical problem. I swapped out the flasher because that was easy but was still dealing with three lights working with the flasher/turn signal. My neighbor mentioned the possibility of a problem with the switch on the column. That was the last thing on my mind, being sure that the old wiring harness had issues. A few sprays of Deoxit and the problem was solved, and a Saturday saved.

The piece I am speaking of is under the dash in the area between the steering column and the hood release.
