66-67 Radio Console Install - Cables

Post by Curtis »

I'm trying to finally put my radio console in. I have learned one important lesson, install console and all the cables and then put the dash in.

The cables are a pain. So I have several old cables and two new barrel end cables for the fresh air vents on each side. Seem to have three cables for the heater control valve.

There is one cable that goes to the hot/cold air valve in the cowl. I have one cable that has a dog leg with loop end and just does not seem to be used. The hot/cold air flapper has just a straight wire cable.

Is this dog leg used anywhere? I have the short rod for the heater door which has a dog leg on one end.

Dog leg goes to the two doors on the side of the heater box closest to the console. The other end goes to the temperature control slider.

I assume you found the cable that goes to the defroster control.

This dog leg is way too long for the doors. The doors use a plain metal rod about 7 inches long with a dog leg. Defroster control is doors shut, flapper valve shut with a cable what has loop on one end and straight on the other shutting off both defrost and heat.

When you move the control lever to defrost the flapper valve opens and doors stay closed. Switch to room and the short rod opens the doors. You now have heat with a bit still flowing up to the defroster ducts.

So the question remains where does the long cable about 15 to 18 inches long go or is it for something else like a tall car? Who know where I might have got it.

Heat/defrost control lever. One loop and one screw for straight wire.

What’s the connection look like on the defroster? I can’t remember.

Straight, large diameter wire to vents (2)
Barrel to throttle
Short dogleg to doors
long straight cable to fresh air intake
Straight wire to water valve
I don’t see any defroster flap in the parts manual & I can picture 6 cables coming from the dash, so that should be it, at least on my half year.

Can you find a location on the dash where the loop on the other end of the cable might go?

I’m leaning towards it being from something other than a low windshield, late roadster or some other vehicle.

Just a wild guess, could a PO have used it as an emergency hood release cable?

Side air vents, two barrel end stranded wire cable to bare end.
Heater valve at firewall, loop end to straight end.
Flapper valve, loop end to straight end.
Doors, short metal rod to straight end.

So a total of 5 cables

So it seems I have answered my question and the long dog leg is for something else. This is what happens when you have a stray cable mixed in with the rest. Not sure where my short rods are at the moment. Have a new one from Rallye.

And the damn thing is still a PITA to put in and get at the cable connections.

Yes, a real PITA! I had trouble routing the choke cable so it didn’t hit the heater door.

If you can’t find your short rods I may be able to find mine Thursday when I get home. I’m in Los Angeles for my dad’s 100th birthday.

I ordered some new 6mm Teflon coated cable housing from Venhill. Going to get some 1/16 stainless tig rod for the wire. The old ones are worn out broken crap.

Curtis, here is a tool that will make those round ends perfectly every time if still available, had this from my early years at dealership in northern Va. KD #495. If you need some pics of assembled heater console and all, let me know, I can take some this evening when I'm at shop.

Bought a cable cutter. Regular wire cutters just ruin the end.

Made the new cables today with the teflon cable and stainless rod. Used a mini wire bender. Loop is slightly larger but works fine.

FWIW, I did a search on "KD 495." Only a few hits; mostly eBay and "vintage." And, yes, it seems its only purpose was to make those coiled wire ends.

Hacksaw and miter box gave me a perfect cut on the cable housing. The tig rod slides perfectly on the teflon.

Not console but a cable. Made a new hood release cable today using an 62 to 69 I think MGB cable. Cable housing is slightly smaller but inner wire is the same. Total cost about $30.
